Broncos continue to produce runs, but pitchers struggle in recent losses to Colts, Lions

The Broncos baseball team suffered a strong of losses at Ohio Field within the past three days, falling to the Colts of Middlesex by a score of 21-7 (seven innings) this past Thursday, before dropping a doubleheader to the Lions of Nassau yesterday by scores of 10-7 and 7-5 (eight innings). With that output, the Broncos are now 9-10 on the 2026 campaign.

April 16, 2026: Colts 21, Broncos 7 (Seven Innings)

In the Broncos' loss to Middlesex, Bronx starter Jhourerling Gonzalez struggled throughout the clash. The Colts took a 2-0 advantage on Stanley Bobadilla's two-RBI single in the top of the first, and the visitors added four more runs in the top of the second courtesy of a two-run homerun by Ryan Acquisto, a RBI triple by Bobadilla, and a RBI infield single by Jangel Albizu. After an inning and a half of play, the Colts held a commanding 6-0 advantage.

Bronx got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with consecutive RBI groundouts by Hector Jimenez and Luis Villaman. That inched the Broncos to within four runs at 6-2.

Middlesex dented home plate twice in the top of the third in a frame that was highlighted by Tamayo's RBI double. The Broncos took advantage of some spotty defense by the visitors in the bottom of the frame by scoring two runs on Colts errors. After three innings of play, Middlesex led 8-4.

Trailing 9-4 in the bottom of the fourth, Adrian Pena's RBI double brought the Broncos to within four (9-5), and Luis Torres brought home two more with a double to left-center. The Broncos then had the tying run at the plate in the person of Jason Espinoza, but he struck out swinging, and Juan Santos flied out to right field to end Bronx's threat.

Middlesex plated a single run in the top of the fifth to go up 10-7, and the visitors added five in the top of the sixth (highlighted by Acquisto's two-run homerun) and six in the top of the seventh (highlighted by a RBI double by Acquisto, and a two-RBI double by John Oranchak) to take a 21-7 advantage.

After the Broncos failed to score in the bottom of the seventh inning, the mercy rule triggered, giving the Colts the victory.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Torres registered a double and a single while scoring a run and driving in two. Pena doubled, dented home plate once, and pick up a RBI, and Rondon continued his stellar hitting, picking up a pair of singles, drawing a walk, and scoring two runs.

Gonzalez (0-2) got the loss on the hill for the Broncos, tossing 1.2 innings and allowing four runs (all earned) on three hits while issuing four walks, hitting a batter, and throwing a wild pitch. Anderson Puello (eight earned runs allowed) and Albert Melendez (nine runs allowed, five earned) combined to allow the other runs for the hosts.

Acquisto was fantastic for the visitors, registering game-highs of six RBI and five hits (two homeruns, a double, two singles) while scoring four runs. Oranchak doubled, walked twice, scored two runs, stole two bases, and picked up three RBI, and Bobadilla fell just a homerun short of the cycle, registering a triple, double, and a single, while scoring two runs, stealing two bases, and driving in three runs. Tamayo (two doubles, a single, four runs scored, three stolen bases, and a walk) and Albizu (two singles, two runs scored, two RBI, a walk and a stolen base) also played key roles offensively for the visitors.

Middlesex starter Maurice Hedderman lasted just two innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while issuing a walk, hitting a batter, and striking out two.  Reliever Joshua Friedman (1-0) struggled but still picked up the win, tossing 1.1 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits while walking three, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out a batter. Relievers Connor Levine and Christopher Peralta combined the throw the final 3.2 innings, not allowing a run and striking out seven Broncos.                                                                                       
April 18, 2026: Game 1 of DH: Lions 10, Broncos 7

In game one, the Broncos took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning, but the Lions dented home plate twice in the top of the second to catapult ahead by a score of 2-1. Bronx took the lead back in the bottom of the third, scoring twice to take a 3-2 advantage.

Nassau then snatched control of the game, scoring two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings, scoring a single run in the sixth, and three in the seventh. Trailing 10-3 and down to their last at-bat, the Broncos scored four runs in the frame, but weren't able to draw any closer, losing the contest by three (10-7).

Torres doubled, singled, and drove in a run for the Broncos in the contest, with Eduardo Flores-Barrientos singling twice, stealing a base, scoring a run, and drawing a walk. Pena contributed a RBI single while also scoring a run, stealing a base, and drawing a walk, and Rondon reached base three times, doubling twice, drawing a walk, and scoring a run.

Anshel Novelo (2-2) tossed a complete game (eight innings), as he took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out 10.

Daniel Reynolds recorded a two-RBI triple while scoring a run and getting hit by a pitch for the Lions, and Anthony Manzi drove in a pair of runs with two singles. Stumpf singled three times, scored twice, and drove in a run, and Siegel picked up two singles, drew a walk, and scored a run.

Michael Jazylo received a no-decision on the hill for the visitors, working five frames and allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits while walking four and striking out five. Chris Marano hurled three innings in relief, as he picked up the victory, allowing just one unearned run on one hit while issuing one free pass, and striking out one.

April 18, 2026: Game 2 of DH: Lions 7, Broncos 5 (Eight Innings)

In game two of the afternoon, the Broncos trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, before proceeding to score three times to knot the contest at five apiece. After both teams went scoreless in the seventh inning, the Lions scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, winning the game, 7-5.

Espinoza led the Broncos offensively, registering three singles, scoring a run, and picking up two RBI. Rondon homered, scored three runs, and picked up a RBI, and Villaman doubled, singled, and drove in a run. Finally, it was Torres singling twice and denting home plate once.

Juan Santos (5-1) pitched a complete game and took the loss, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 16 hits while issuing three walks, hitting a batter, and striking out eight.

Caiden Siegel led the way offensively for Nassau in game one, notching a double, picking up two singles, stealing a base, and registering four RBI. Chris Stumpf singled three times, dented home plate three times, drew a walk, and picked up a pair of RBI, and Alex Darzano singled three times, scored two runs, and picked up a RBI.

Cian Cantwell picked up the victory for the Lions, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing six runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out 10.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to North Branch, NJ to take on Raritan Valley Community College. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 3:30pm.
