Broncos cap 2025-2026 campaign by registering program's first NJCAA D3 Tournament win by outlasting Roadrunners, 70-68

In what has been a historic season for the Broncos' women's basketball team, Bronx achieved one final accolade before wrapping up the 2025-2026 campaign, defeating the Roadrunners of Rowan College of South Jersey by a score of 70-68 in the consolation game of the NJCAA Division 3 Tournament. The contest took place at the Brownwood Coliseum in Brownwood, Texas.

The triumph for Bronx was its first ever in the NJCAA Division 3 Tournament, as the Broncos finalized their year at 19-6. The Roadrunners capped their season at 21-6.

Standout Destiny Davis paced the Broncos in their victory, as she connected on eight of her 12 shot attempts (including four of six from downtown) to finish with a team-high 20 points. Her eight assists and four steals were also game-highs, and she also snatched four rebounds. Ana Matos, in her final game as a Bronco, connected on four triples, finishing with 18 points, four assists, two rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot, and Kolonnie Green added eight points, a team-high 10 rebounds, a game-high six blocks, and two steals.

Pacing Rowan College of South Jersey despite the loss was Shannon Pierman, as she connected on 15 of 26 shot attempts, and nine of 11 from the stripe, to finish with a game-high 39 points. Her 19 rebounds (11 offensive) also led all players. Anna DiPiero and Jameeleyonna Horace also scored seven points apiece, with DiPiero adding three rebounds and three assists, and Horace finalizing her day with a pair of steals.

In what was a very competitive game from start to finish, the teams exchanged the lead nine times in the first quarter, with the final pendulum swing of the opening 10 minutes coming when Savanna Shute drained a layup to put her team up 21-20 before the buzzer.

Over the course of the opening 2:11 of the second quarter, Bronx used a pair of drained freebees by Madison Wade, and a swished jumper by Matos, to take the lead, 24-21, triggering the 10th lead change of the contest to that point. Later, with 3:19 remaining in the half, Davis buried a triple to give the Broncos their biggest lead of the game, 35-27, an eight-point edge. Rowan College of South Jersey responded with 11 straight points over a span of 2:43, highlighted by four points apiece by Pierman and DiPiero. Bronx halted the Roadrunners' momentum when Green scored a bucket with nine seconds left in the half. At intermission, the Broncos trailed by 1, 38-37.

In a low-scoring third quarter, the teams combined for just 21 points. The Broncos trailed 44-40 at one point, but a 7-0 run them back in the lead, 47-44. That aforementioned run featured a bucket by Angelina Gonzalez, and five straight points from Davis. Rowan College of South Jersey outscored Bronx 4-1 for the rest of the quarter, leaving the team deadlocked at 48 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Roadrunners trailed 50-48, before going on a 12-3 run over the course of 4:54 to take a 60-53 edge. Pierman accounted for eight of her team's 12 points during that spurt. Bronx, just as it has done all season, never gave up, scoring seven quick points in just 1:13 to knot the game at 60-all. Davis and Gonzalez registered buckets, and Matos hit the trifecta that tied the score.

The Broncos were much more efficient shooting the basketball on the day, as Bronx converted on 26 of its 56 shot attempts (46.4 percent), while the Roadrunners connected on just 28 of 76 shots (36.8 percent). Rowan College of South Jersey lost the contest despite out-rebounding the Broncos 55-30, but the Broncos held advantages in assists (19-12), steals (11-9), and blocked shots (7-1). The Broncos won the turnover battle as
well, committing 17 miscues, while the Roadrunners had 18.

The 2025-2026 campaign is now in the books, with the Broncos having accomplished an incredible amount in Craig Williams' second season as Head Coach.

After going on an 11 game winning streak to start calendar year 2026, Bronx won its first CUNY championship in nine seasons, and then followed that by qualifying for both the NJCAA Region XV, and NJCAA Division III women's basketball tournaments. This afternoon's triumph over the Roadrunners served as the team's first ever in the NJCAA Division III Tourney, following multiple weeks of being ranked inside the top 14 in the country.

Additionally, Bronx boasted four CUNY All-Conference players, as well as four NJCAA Region XV All-Region honorees, and Craig Williams won the Coach of the Year for both CUNY and NJCAA Region XV. With a solid core of players expected to return, and coach Williams' ability to recruit solid talent, the future continues to be bright for the resurgent Broncos as they look ahead to the 2026-2027 campaign!
