Broncos punch ticket to CUNY Championship game for first time since 2022, dominating Red Hawks in semifinals, 83-53

The Broncos' women's basketball team picked up its tenth consecutive victory on Tuesday evening, defeating the Red Hawks of LaGuardia by a score of 83-53 in the semifinal round of the CUNY Community College Tournament. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the triumph, the Broncos bumped their record to 17-4, staying unblemished in calendar year 2026. LaGuardia dipped to 6-12 with the defeat.

Pacing Bronx in its victory was veteran Angelina Gonzalez, as she scored a team-high 19 points, while leading all players with seven steals. She also snatched three rebounds, while dishing two assists. Destiny Dickerson contributed 13 points, four assists, and three boards, and Ana Matos finalized her evening with 12 points, five caroms, three assists, a pair of swatted shots, and to steals. Destiny Davis contributed 11 points, three boards, and two assists, and Kolonnie Green just missed registering a double-double, as she finished with nine points, a team-high 10 rebounds, six steals, and game-highs of five assists and three swatted shots.

Despite the loss for LaGuardia, Aniyah Williams netted a team-high 21 points (7-7 FT) while snatching 10 rebounds and swiping three steals. Fily Dip contributed nine points, a team-high six steals, five rebounds, and three assists, and Renayah Fernandez registered eight points, collected 11 rebounds, and dished two assists.

The Broncos raced out to an early 5-0 advantage in the opening 1:42, thanks to a drained freebee by Dickerson, and two consecutive hoops by Gonzalez. The Red Hawks responded with five straight points, with Fernandez hitting a free throw, and Fily Diop scoring two baskets. Shortly later, with the game knotted at seven apiece, Bronx rattled off 11 straight points over a span of 2:02 to snatch an 18-7 advantage. Davis started the run with two converted free throws, and capped it with a basket. The Broncos led 23-14 after 10 minutes of action.
 
The Broncos used stellar defense in the second quarter to gradually extend their advantage. The hosts allowed just four field goals over a 10 minute span, going up by 17 points on three different occasions before taking a commanding 41-26 advantage at halftime.

Went play resumed, Bronx dominated the third quarter. After LaGuardia's Williams started the quarter with a bucket, the Broncos responded with a 10-0 run (courtesy of four points by Yahannis Martinez, and two points apiece by Dickerson, Gonzalez, and Green) to snatch a 23-point advantage (51-28). After Fernandez halted LaGuardia's follies with a hoop, Gonzalez contributed a pair of buckets to put the Broncos ahead, 55-30.

The hosts continued to push, eventually taking their biggest lead of the game (a 29-point advantage) when Matos swished a buzzer-beating triple to put the Broncos ahead 66-37.

In the fourth quarter, Bronx outscored LaGuardia 17-16, going up by 33 points twice, before going on to within the game by 30, 83-53.

Bronx was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Broncos connected on 37.6 percent of its shots from the floor (35-93), and 68.8 percent from the free throw line (11-16). The visitors connected on just 19 out of 63 shot attempts (30.2 percent), while draining 13 of 21 freebees (61.9 percent).

LaGuardia held a 56-49 edge on the glass, but Bronx held advantages in assists (27-12), steals (19-13), and blocked shots (7-1). The Broncos won the turnover battle, committing 22 on the evening, while the Red Hawks finished with 45.

Bronx will now advance to the CUNY Community College title game against Kingsborough. The teams will clash at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, with a start-time of 6:00pm.
