Bronx captures 2025 CUNY championship with 11-1 drubbing of Kingsborough; Jimenez pitches complete-game gem with 12 strikeouts

Coming into the 2025 CUNY championship game, the Broncos were 1-15 in their last 16 regular season contests against the Wave, while also dropping the last three conference title games to them. None of that history came into play today, as Bronx dominated Kingsborough from start to finish, with the Broncos winning the CUNY crown by a score of 11-1 (seven innings).

It was Bronx's 12th CUNY title under Head Coach Adolfo DeJesus, who is currently wrapping up his 39th season at the helm (there was no season in 2021). Furthermore, it was the Broncos' first CUNY crown since defeating the Wave 9-7 at MCU Park back in 2019.

On the mound for the CUNY titlists was the conference's Pitcher of the Year Frailin Jimenez, the team's standout ace pitcher. He came through in a huge way today, hurling a complete game (seven innings), allowing just one run on five hits while walking three batters, hitting one, and striking out 12. Incredibly, Jimenez faced just four batters passed the minimum, exhibiting a dominant flow throughout.

At the dish, Jason Espinoza's first inning three-run triple was huge. He also added a single and dented home plate twice. Luis Torres picked up three RBI's in the triumph, reaching base three times, singling twice and getting hit by a pitch. He also scored two runs on the afternoon. Adrian Pena added a game-high three hits (all singles) while collecting two RBI's and drawing a walk, and Justin Rosario-Cruz, William Whitcomb, and Giancarlo Leon each scored two runs on the day.

Robert Pacifici (5-3) earned the start for the No. 1 seeded Wave, but he didn't last long, tossing just two frames and allowing seven runs (all earned) on five hits while walking three, hitting two batters, and throwing a wild pitch. He took the loss on the day. Reliever Alejandro Caballero didn't fare much better, yielding four runs and six hits while walking three and balking once in four innings of work. Stephen Pearson struck out the side in a perfect seventh.

Kingsborough managed just five hits on the day, including just one for extra bases, which was a run-producing double by Filippo Venditti in the first. Nicholas Fancellu and Ramsley Rodriguez each produced two singles for the Wave in a losing cause.

The Broncos took control of the game early, scoring six runs in the top of the first. Leon drew a walk with the bases load to produce Bronx's first run, and Torres was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the Broncos' second run. A three-run triple by Espinoza and an RBI single by Pena accounted for the rest of Bronx's run production in the first.

Kingsborough got one run back in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double by Venditti, but after that, it was all Bronx.

The Broncos plated single runs in each of the third (RBI single by Pena) and fourth (RBI single by Torres) frames, snatching an 8-1 advantage after four innings of play. Bronx then tacked on three more in the sixth, courtesy of RBI singles by Torres and Juan Rodriguez, and a bases-loaded balk by Caballero.

In the bottom of the seventh, with a runner on first base and two outs, Venditti flied out to right field, setting off a wild celebration by the Broncos.

Now with a CUNY championship under their belts for 2025, Bronx will look to continue its successful season tomorrow afternoon, as the team gets set to participate in the double-elimination NJCAA Region XV Tournament. The No. 4 seeded Broncos will take on the No. 1 seeded Sharks of Suffolk at Middle Country Park (Selden, NY). Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
