Broncos finalize 2025 campaign with losses to Suffolk and Monroe University-Bronx in NJCAA Region XV Tournament

The Broncos' baseball team wrapped up its 2025 season on Thursday afternoon, falling in consecutive games in the NJCAA Region XV Championship Tournament to No. 1 seeded Suffolk 9-4, and No. 2 seeded Monroe University-Bronx, 11-1 (six innings). With that two game output, Bronx finalized its season at 20-21. Suffolk improved to 38-11, and the Express improved to 28-15.

Game 1 of the Day – Suffolk Sharks 9, Bronx Broncos 4

Roberto Genao led the charge offensively for the Broncos, as the standout freshman registered three hits for the game, including a triple and a pair of singles. He also stole four bases on the afternoon, drove in a pair of runs, dented home plate once, and walked. Juan Rodriguez registered an RBI double, and William Whitcomb added a pair of singles, a walk, an RBI, and a stolen base. Jason Espinoza singled twice and scored a run, and Luis Villaman doubled and dented home plate once.

Anshel Novelo (4-4) started and took the loss for Bronx in his final start of the 2025 campaign, as he allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits while hitting six batters, walking five, throwing two wild pitches, and striking out four.

The Sharks did a majority of their damage offensively in the third, fourth, and fifth innings of the contest, plating three runs in each of those aforementioned frames. The Broncos trailed 6-1 after four innings of action, and 9-2 after five, and were unable to draw any closer than five runs down and Suffolk advanced to win the contest, 9-4.

Game 2 of the Day – Monroe-Bronx Express 11, Bronx Broncos 1 (Six Innings)

In the Broncos' season-ending loss to the Express, Bronx was only able to manage one hit on the evening – a single by Espinoza.

Abel Acosta Vasquez (0-2) took the loss for the Broncos, allowing 11 runs (four earned) on 10 hits while walking four, hitting a pair of batters, and striking out four.

Offensively for Monroe University-Bronx, Yan Ortiz Torres drove in three runs and stole two bases. Pablo Aquino went 2-for-4 and scored three runs. Anthony Sanchez registered two hits and dented home plate twice. Nomar Rodriguez singled, walked, and scored twice.

Myles Pleasants recorded a complete-game victory for the Express, striking out nine batters and allowing no earned runs, no walks, and just one hit in six innings pitched.

The Express dented home plate four times in the bottom of the second to snatch a 4-0 advantage. Bronx got one of those runs back in the top of the third when Pena stole second, and Espinoza was able to score via a throwing error by Monroe catcher Nomar Rodriguez.

Later, in the home half of the fourth, Ortiz Torres produced a two-run single to push Monroe's advantage to five runs, 6-1. An inning later, Sanchez launched a homerun to give the Express a commanding 7-1 edge.

The Express put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to trigger the 10-run mercy rule. A two-run double off the bat of Yadiel Santana gave Monroe an 8-1 lead. Christopher Marlin then drilled a ball over the left-field fence for a two-run home run which clinched the victory for the Express.

A season to be proud of for the Broncos

Despite the Broncos coming up short in the NJCAA Region XV Tournament, the team accomplished plenty during this 2025 campaign. The squad notched 20 victories for the first time since the 2018 season, and captured its first CUNY title since 2019.

Additionally, Frailin Jimenez, Robert Genao, Luis Torres, and William Whitcomb were named NJCAA region XV All-Stars, with Gabriel Perdomo earning a Sportsmanship team. Jimenez, Genao, Torres, and Whitcomb were also named CUNY All-Stars, with Jimenez getting voted the Pitcher of the Year.
