Game Recap: Baseball |

Bronx splits final two home contests of 2025 campaign, downing Tigers 15-3 before getting edged by Express, 11-9

The Broncos baseball team split their final two home games of the 2025 regular season in recent days, defeating the Tigers of Queensborough by a score of 15-3 on Wednesday afternoon, before turning around the following day and dropping a nail-biter to the Express of Monroe University-Bronx by a score of 11-9. With the two-game output, the Broncos are now 19-17 (9-3 CUNY C.C.C.), while the Tigers slipped to 5-20 (2-10 CUNY C.C.C.), and the Express improved to 25-14.

April 30 – Bronx Broncos 15, Queensborough Tigers 3 (Five Innings)

In Bronx's dominant victory over the Tigers this past Wednesday, Giancarlo Leon registered a game-high three RBI's, registering a double and getting bit by a pitch while stealing a base and scoring a run. Jason Espinoza drove in a pair with a double. He also walked, stole a base, and scored two runs. William Whitcomb was the only Bronco on the day with multiple hits, as he doubled twice, dented home plate twice, drove in a pair, stole a base, and walked. Finally, it was Adrian Pena registering a two-RBI single.

Abel Acosta Vasquez started the game and registered just two outs, issuing three walks and striking out a batter. He was relieved by Kevin Baez who finished the rest of the game, tossing 4.1 frames and allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while walking none, hitting a batter, and striking out seven.

Bronx plated five runs in the bottom of the second inning to snatch a commanding 5-0 edge. After Queensborough scratched out a pair of runs in the top of the third, the Broncos scored 10 times in the bottom of the fourth to extend their advantage to 15-2.  The Tigers scored just once in the top of the fifth, triggering the 10-run mercy rule, and a Bronx victory.

May 1 – Monroe University-Bronx Express 11, Bronx Broncos 9

Prior to the game, the institution's Department of Athletics and the baseball program took a few moments to honor three sophomores who had given so much to the program during their tenures on the team, including Frailin Jimenez, Juan Rodriguez, and William Whitcomb. Each student-athlete was presented with commemorative picture frame photos by Head Coach Adolfo DeJesus and Associate Head Coach Orosmar Cuevas.

Despite the loss for the Bronx, Robert Genao reached base four times, registering a single and walking three times. He also recorded a sacrifice fly and scored a run, as well. Luis Villaman also reached base four times, drawing three walks and getting hit by a pitch while denting home plate twice and picking up an RBI. Whitcomb singled, walked, got hit by a pitch, and earned an RBI. Leon singled, walked, scored a run, and drove in one, and Espinoza finished with three singles while denting home plate once.

Justin Rosario Cruz started and took the loss for the Broncos, as he lasted just two innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits while walking three and striking out one. After Whitcomb allowed three earned runs on three walks and a wild pitch, Fernando Santiago finished the rest of the game, tossing seven frames and allowing four earned runs on nine hits while walking six, hitting a batter, and striking out two.

Offensively for Monroe University-Bronx, Yan Ortiz Torres went a perfect 5-for-5 and drove in three runs. Juan Diaz went 2-for-3, scored three times, and compiled two runs batted in. Pablo Aquino scored twice.

On the mound for the Express, Jose Capellan earned the victory in relief as he struck out four batters in 3.2 innings pitched. Roman earned his third save of the season. Sael Flete started the game for Monroe and struck out three batters in 3.1 innings pitched. Justin Martinez gave up no earned runs and fanned a batter in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Bronx snatched a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning, courtesy of Leon's RBI walk. In the top of the third, Monroe's bats erupted, scoring seven runs in the inning. Highlights of Monroe's productive inning were an RBI triple by Abraham Joaquin Taveras, a run-producing double from Torres, bases loaded free passes by Elijah Andino and Giovanny Flores, and a two-run single courtesy of Diaz. Also in the frame, Aquino registered an RBI that pushed the Express into the lead.

Later, in the bottom of the fourth, the Broncos got three runs back to pull to within three at 7-4. Genao's RBI single brought home Santiago, but both Villaman and Genao scored via an error by the Monroe University-Bronx center fielder.

In the top of the seventh inning, Ortiz Torres drove in two runs with a single to push Monroe's lead five runs, 9-4. Aquino then executed an impressive steal of home plate to make it 10-4 in favor of the Express.

Monroe University-Bronx tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth courtesy of a sacrifice fly to right by Robert Herrera, as the visitors held a commanding seven run advantage at that point, 11-4.

Just as they've done all season, though, the Broncos would not go down without a fight. In the bottom of the ninth, the Broncos scored three runs via bases-loaded walks (Rodriguez, Vazquez, Villaman) to pull to within four. After a sacrifice fly by Genao sliced Monroe's lead to 11-8, Whitcomb registered a pop fly single to inch the Broncos to within two, 11-9. On that same play, however, Villaman rounded second base and tried to get to third since the base was unoccupied, but he was thrown out to end the thrilling game.

Up Next for the Broncos

The Broncos will wrap-up their regular season portion of the schedule on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx travels to Roberto Clemente State Park to take on the Express of Monroe University-Bronx in a doubleheader. Start-times are scheduled for 12:00pm and 3:00pm.
