Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos split pair of home games, blowing out Tigers 14-1 before getting edged by Express, 8-7

The Broncos' baseball team split a pair of home contests in recent days. This past Monday afternoon, Bronx dominated the Tigers of Queensborough in CUNY action, defeating them by a score of 14-1 (five innings). Yesterday, the Broncos had their nine-game winning streak halted, as they were edged by the Express of Monroe University-Bronx by a score of 8-7 in a thriller. With the 1-1 output, the Broncos are now 18-16 on the 2025 campaign (8-3 CUNY C.C.C.), while Queensborough dipped to 5-18 (2-9 CUNY C.C.C.), and Monroe University-Bronx improved to 22-14.

Monday, April 28 – Bronx Broncos 14, Queensborough Tigers 1 (five innings)

In the Broncos' commanding victory over the Tigers, Bronx's offensive charge was led by sophomore William Whitcomb, as he registered a game-high three RBI's on the day, recording a triple and a double while also scoring three runs and drawing a walk. Luis Villaman reached base three times on the afternoon, smacking a double, recording a single, and getting hit by a pitch. He also picked up two RBI's and dented home plate twice. Finally, it was standout Robert Genao singling three times, stealing a game-high five bases, contributing two RBI's, and scoring two runs.

On the hill, ace Frailin Jimenez (8-3) picked up his team-leading eighth win of the 2025 season, as he hurled a complete game (five innings), allowing just one unearned run on two hits while issuing four walks and striking out 10.

The Broncos offense wasted no time putting this contest out of reach early, as Bronx dented home plate three times in the bottom of the first inning, before plating six more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 9-0 advantage after two frames. The home school continued to pile it on in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on five more runs to take a commanding 14-0 edge. The Tigers were only able to scratch out one run in the top of the fifth, as the 10-run mercy rule triggered, giving the Broncos a 14-1 win.

Tuesday, April 29 – Monroe-Bronx Express 8, Bronx Broncos 7

In Bronx's tough 8-7 loss to the Express, Justin Rosario-Cruz fell just a double short of hitting for the cycle, as he hit a towering homerun, tripled, singled, drove in a game-high four RBI's, and scored two runs. Luis Torres smacked three singles, scored a run, and stole a base, and Giancarlo Leon reached base three times, doubling, hitting a single, and getting hit by a pitch. He also drove in a run and dented home plate once. Luis Villaman (double, single) and Jason Espinoza (two singles) earned two hits apiece, with Espinoza also stealing a base and driving in a run, and William Whitcomb singled twice and dented home plate twice.

Anshel Novelo took the loss for the Broncos (4-3), hurling 7.2 innings and allowing six earned runs on 11 hits while walking five and striking out five. Jimenez tossed 1.1 frames in relief, allowing two earned runs on four hits while issuing one walk, plunking one batter, and whiffing two.

At the plate for the Express, Robert Herrera and Edwin Minaya Jr. each recorded three hits, with the former denting home plate twice and the latter smacking a double. Elijah Andino produced two base hits, scored a run, and swiped a bag. Pablo Aquino singled, scored a pair of runs, worked a walk, and stole a base.

On the mound for the Express, Myles Pleasants started and received a no-decision, tossing five innings and allowing four runs (earned) on eight hits while issuing one walk, hitting a batter, and striking out six. Reliever Luis Roman (1-1) picked up the victory, tossing 1.1 scoreless frames and yielding just two hits while striking out one. Marcus Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two, to earn his first save of the 2025 campaign.

Monroe University-Bronx snatched a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first on RBI singles by Herrera and Minaya Jr., and that score remained true until the bottom of the sixth inning, where the Broncos broke through for four runs to snatch a 4-2 advantage. Rosario-Cruz launched a two-run moonshot homerun to tie the game 2-2, and an RBI single by Espinoza, as well as a bases loaded walk by Genao, served as the other two runs in the frame. After six complete, the Broncos led 4-2.

The Express, trailing by two in the top of the eighth rallied to score four runs in the frame, all with two outs, to take the lead. A key moment in the frame was Gregory Cabrera lacing a game-tying single through the right side with two outs, scoring Elijah Andino. Two batters later, Yan Ortiz Torres drilled a triple to right center, scoring a pair of runners to give the Express a 6-4 advantage. Herrera and Minaya Jr. each recorded RBI base hits later in the eighth to push Monroe Univeristy-Bronx's advantage to 8-4 to cap the scoring for the frame.

Bronx then staged one of its many rallies throughout the 2025 campaign in the bottom of the eighth, all with two outs. Rosario-Cruz's two-RBI triple to left sliced the Broncos' deficit to two, 8-6, and Leon's double to left field brought the hosts to within a run, 8-7. Later, with runners on the corners and two outs, Torres was caught stealing at second base, ending the threat.

The Express were held scoreless in the top of the ninth. Rodriguez took the hill for Monroe in the bottom of the ninth. After retiring the first two batters, he struck out the final hitter swinging to nail down the save and clinch the key regional win for the Express.

Next up for the Broncos

The Broncos will look to bounce back from Tuesday's loss on Wednesday afternoon, as Bronx welcomes Queensborough to Ohio Field for its final regular season CUNY contest of 2025. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
