Game Recap: Baseball |

Bronx earns blowout victories over Queensborough and BMCC to clinch berth in 2025 CUNY title game

The Broncos' baseball team won its sixth and seventh straight games in recent days, demolishing the Tigers of Queensborough by a score of 15-1 at Padavan-Preller Field (Bellerose, NY) Tuesday afternoon, before blowing out the Panthers of BMCC 12-6 at Ohio Field on Wednesday. With the triumphs, Bronx is now 16-15 on the 2025 campaign (6-3 CUNY). The Tigers fell to 5-16 (2-7 CUNY), while the Panthers dipped to 2-19 (2-10 CUNY).

With that aforementioned output, Bronx clinched a spot in the 2025 CUNY title game, qualifying for the championship contest for the sixth consecutive season. The game will take place on Monday, May 5, at a location to-be-announced. The Broncos' opponent will be none other than Kingsborough, a rematch of the previous four CUNY title clashes.

Tuesday, April 22 – Bronx Broncos 15, Queensborough Tigers 1

Offensively for the Broncos in their victory over the Tigers, Luis Torres put forth a sensational effort, as he registered four hits, including a double and three singles, while also leading all players with three RBI's on the afternoon. The standout also stole four bases and dented home plate twice. Robert Genao smacked another two doubles, added a single, drove in two, walked, scored a run, and stole four bases, and Luis Villaman picked up an RBI single, stole four bases, scored a pair of runs, and drew a walk. Other Broncos contributing multi-hit games were Giancarlo Leon (two singles, three stolen bases, a run scored, an RBI, and a walk) and Gabriel Perdomo (two singles, four stolen bases, three runs scored, and an RBI). Finally, it was William Whitcomb reaching base three times, recording a single, walking twice, scoring three runs, and stealing two bases.

Anshel Novelo (4-2) was masterful for the Broncos on the hill, as he earned the victory with eight strong innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while walking two, hitting one batter, and striking out a whopping 14. He faced just eight batters past the minimum, working very efficiently throughout the afternoon, and not yielding a run until the sixth inning.

Bronx dented home plate twice in each of the first, third, and sixth innings, taking a 6-0 advantage after five and a half frames. The Tigers were able to get on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Broncos added three more in the seventh, and a whopping six in the top of the eighth, to take a 15-1 advantage. After Queensborough didn't score in the bottom of the eighth, the 10-run mercy rule triggered, giving the Broncos the commanding victory.

Wednesday, April 23 – Bronx Broncos 12, BMCC Panthers 6

Leading the way for the Broncos at the dish in their victory over the Panthers was Leon, as he hit an inside-the-park grand slam, doubled, singled twice, drove in five runs, scored twice, stole two bases, and walked. Villaman continued his hot hitting, contributing a triple and a double while driving in a pair and denting home plate once. Adrian Pena doubled, singled twice, stole a base, scored a run, and picked up an RBI, and Juan Rodriguez and Dario Vazquez contributed two singles apiece, with Rodriguez also walking twice, denting home plate twice, and driving in a run, and Vazquez walking, scoring a run, and earning an RBI.

Abel Acosta Vasquez got the start for the Broncos and pitched respectably, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while hitting a batter and striking out two. Kevin Baez (3-4) earned the victory in relief, hurling 6.1 frames and allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits while walking three, hitting two batters, and striking out five.

Nassaiah Flores earned a team-high two RBI's on the afternoon, smacking a double, hitting a single, and getting hit by a pitch. He also scored a run, as well. Christopher Toribio doubled twice, drove in a run, and scored a run, and Michael Marra singled twice, walked, dented home plate once, and picked up an RBI.

Brennan Rivas earned the start for BMCC and pitched very well, allowing just one unearned run over six innings while yielding six hits, walking three, and striking out five. Sebastian Oliveras (0-2) got rocked in relief, as he took the loss by allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out one.

Things looked promising for BMCC through the first five-and-a-half innings of action, as the visitors built a 4-0 lead. The Panthers were aided by an error in scoring their run in the second inning, while Christopher Toribio's double produced the Panthers' second run in the third. A two-RBI double to left by Flores in the sixth accounted for BMCC's third and fourth runs on the afternoon. After that, it was all Broncos.

Bronx got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI double by Leon. The Broncos then broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring eight runs in the frame. Genao's RBI single to center brought Bronx to within a pair (4-2), and Leon's inside-the-park grand slam gave the hosts the lead for good, 6-4. Pena's RBI double produced the Broncos' seventh run, and Villaman's two-RBI double later in the inning brought home Bronx's eighth and ninth runs of the day. Bronx led 9-4 after seven innings.

BMCC did get two runs back in the top of the eighth, but the Broncos added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning (courtesy of RBI singles by Rodriguez and Vazquez, and an error that allowed Leon to score as well). Bronx led 12-6 after eight, and would go on to win the game by that same score.

Next up for the Broncos

Bronx will look to keep its winning streak going on Friday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Padavan-Preller Field for a clash with Queensborough. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 3:30pm.
