Game Recap: Baseball |

Bronx stays hot, registers huge NJCAA Region XV sweep with victories over Lions in Garden City, NY

The Broncos' baseball team continued to roll on Saturday afternoon, picking up a huge NJCAA Region XV sweep by defeating the Lions of Nassau by scores of 7-5 and 7-6 (eight innings) in Garden City, NY. With the victories, Bronx improved to a record of 13-15 on the 2025 campaign, while the Lions dipped to a mark of 11-13 on the year.

Game 1 of DH: Bronx Broncos 7, Nassau Lions 5

Robert Genao continued his incredible hot streak at the plate, as he recorded two doubles, hitting a single, drawing a walk, scoring two runs, and swiping a bag in the Broncos' opening-game victory. Justin Rosario Cruz reached base three times, walking twice and registering a two-RBI single. He also scored a run and stole a base, as well. Like Rosario Cruz, William Whitcomb also reached base three times, smacking a double, recording a single, and drawing a walk, and stealing a base. Juan Rodriguez recorded an RBI single and scored a run, and Luis Villaman drove home a run while denting home plate once.

On the hill for the Broncos, Kevin Baez (2-4) tossed a solid complete game, earning the victory by allowing five runs (just two earned) on four hits while walking three batters, hitting three, and striking out three.

With the game knotted at one apiece after two innings of play, the Broncos' big run-producing frame came in the top of the third, as the visitors dented home plate six times to snatch a 7-1 advantage. The Lions were able to score two in the bottom of the third, and another two in the seventh, but Bronx was able to hold on as Baez halted Nassau's seventh inning momentum to nail down the key victory for his squad.

Game 2 of DH: Bronx Broncos 7, Nassau Lions 6 (Eight Innings)

Genao played a huge role in helping the Broncos register the sweep, as in game two of the doubleheader, the standout hit a homerun while driving in three runs. Giancarlo Leon singled twice and picked up a pair of RBI's, and Rodriguez added another two hits, doubling, singling, and scoring two runs. Finally, it was Fernando Santiago contributing two RBI's and denting home plate once.

Abel Acosta Vasquez started and earned a no-decision for the Broncos, tossing five frames and allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out four. Reliever Justin Rosario Cruz earned the victory, tossing three scoreless frames and yielding just two hits while walking one and striking out two.

Trailing 6-3 heading into their final turn at-bat, the Broncos plated three runs before holding the Lions scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. In the extra frame, Bronx scored a run in the top of the eighth, a run that turned out to be the game-winner.

Next up for the Broncos

Bronx will return to action on Monday afternoon, as the Broncos will take on the Panthers of BMCC in a CUNY contest. The game will take place at Ohio Field, with a first pitch time of 3:00pm.
