Bronx begins CUNY Conference portion of 2025 schedule with tough 9-7 loss to Kingsborough

Bronx's baseball team lost its CUNY Conference opener on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the defending champions, the Kingsborough Wave, by a score of 9-7. The game took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx, and was called after seven innings due to a lack of sunlight. With the defeat, the Broncos had their four-game winning streak snapped, dipping to 7-12 on the 2025 campaign (0-1 C.C.C.), while the Wave improved to 12-7 (1-0 C.C.C).

Newcomer Luis Villaman served as the team's primary offensive contributor, as he registered a triple and a single while driving in five runs, and denting home plate once. Jason Espinoza and Luis Torres got on base three times apiece, as Espinoza recorded a pair of singles while walking and picking up a RBI, and Torres finalized his day with two singles, two runs scored, and he always reached via a hit-by-pitch. Finally, it was William Whitcomb doubling, drawing a walk, and driving in a run.

Broncos ace Frailin Jimenez took the loss on the hill (2-3), as he allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits while issuing five walks, hitting two batters, and striking out seven. He was followed by Anshel Novelo, who gave up four runs (two earned) on two hits while walking three, hitting a batter, balking once, and striking out two.

Offensively for the Wave, Gianmarcus Hernandez reached base three times, registering two singles, walking, and driving in three runs. Sam Lee tripled, walked, scored a run, and picked up two RBI, and Colby Sararas singled, walked, dented home plate once, and drove in a run. Finally, it was Nicholas Fancellu hitting a double and a single, and scoring a run

Filippo Venditti (3-2) earned the victory for Kingsborough, as he labored through 5.2 frames, allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits while issuing six walks, hitting a batter, and striking out four. Alejandro Caballero earned a four-out save, tossing 1.1 innings and allowing two runs (earned) on one hit while issuing one walk, hitting a batter, and striking out two.

With the CUNY Conference clash scoreless in the bottom of the second, the Broncos had a golden opportunity with the bases loaded and two men out. Villaman stepped up to the plate and registered a three-run double to give the Broncos a 3-0 advantage. Espinoza's bloop single into shallow right field pushed Bronx's edge to 4-0.

Kingsborough climbed back into the game in the top of the third, plating three runs, all with two outs. The first run to come across came when Sararas drew a bases-loaded walk, and another run trotted home via a Jimenez wild pitch. Hernandez's infield RBI single brought the visitors to within one (4-3) before the Jimenez escaped further trouble by striking out Juan Nunez.

In the top of the fifth, the Wave tied the game at four apiece on a RBI single by Hernandez. With runners on the corners and one out, Nunez hit a bouncing ball to Espinoza, who scooped it up, stepped on second base, and then threw the ball wide of the first base bag. That allowed Sararas to score, as the visitors secured a 5-4 advantage.

Bronx threatened in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners on the corners with two out, but Torres was caught stealing at second to end the Broncos' threat.

Kingsborough plated two more runs in the top of the sixth courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Sam Lee, and a RBI walk drawn by Hernandez. The Wave led 7-4 at that juncture, but Bronx got one run back in the bottom half of the sixth when Whitcomb toughed-out a bases loaded walk to make it 7-5.

The Wave scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, with the latter of those runs scoring via a RBI triple by Lee. Kingsborough led 9-5 at that point, and took that aforementioned four run lead into the bottom of the seventh.

With Caballero in the game for Kingsborough, Bronx drew to within two (9-7) on a two-RBI single by Villaman, as the Broncos found themselves down just 9-7. With the tying run on first, Caballero came up huge, striking out Juan Rodriguez and Robert Genao to end the threat.

The teams continued to play in the top of the eighth before the umpires finally decided to cut the game short as it became significantly dark. And with that, Kingsborough secured game one of the four-game series.

The Broncos and Wave will lock up in game two of this four-game set this Friday afternoon, with first pitch at Ohio Field scheduled for 3:00pm, weather-permitting.
