Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos earn pair of statement victories in recent days, turning back Kingsborough 3-1, and Nassau, 7-4

The Broncos' baseball team picked up a pair of crucial victories in recent days, turning back the Wave of Kingsborough in Brooklyn this past Wednesday by a score of 3-1, before turning around less than 24 hours later and defeating the Lions of Nassau 7-4 at Ohio Field. With that impressive two-game output, Bronx improved to a mark of 11-15 on the 2025 campaign (11-15 overall, 3-3 CUNY C.C.C.). Kingsborough dipped to 18-8 (5-1 CUNY C.C.C.), and Nassau fell to 11-11.

April 16 – Bronx Broncos 3, Kingsborough Wave 1

Offensively for Bronx, Justin Rosario Cruz had the big blast for the victors, hitting a tie-breaking, two-run homer in the sixth inning, a blast that turned out to be the difference in the contest. Luis Villaman singled twice, scored two runs, and stole two bases, and Robert Genao registered a pair of singles while swiping two bags. Adrian Pena recorded a double, and William Whitcomb's RBI groundout got the Broncos on the board.

On the hill for the Broncos, ace Frailin Jimenez (5-3) pitched brilliantly, tossing a complete game and allowing just one earned run on four hits while walking five, hitting a batter, and striking out 12.

With the conference foes tied at one run apiece in the top of the sixth, Rosario Cruz's two-run blast gave the Broncos a 3-1 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish.

April 17 – Bronx Broncos 7, Nassau Lions 4 (Six Innings)

Catcher Juan Rodriguez's two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning snapped a five-all tie with the Lions, as that moonshot homerun turned out to be the difference in the NJCAA Region XV contest. The veteran also scored two runs and stole two bases on the afternoon. Genao earned a pair of doubles while also denting home plate once and driving in two, and Luis Torres singled twice and picked up an RBI. Finally, it was Adrian Pena smacking two singles while scoring twice.

Anshel Novelo (3-2) showed a tremendous amount of poise, bending but not breaking in a gutsy complete-game effort. In his six innings of work, he allowed just three earned runs on five hits while walking four, hitting three batters, and striking out six. He escaped some big jams in the contest, stranding eight Lions on base throughout the course of the afternoon.

Eric Sharp led the charge for the Lions offensively, as he doubled and scored a run. Chris Stumpf and Carmine Scardina each had a single and an RBI, with Stumpf also stealing a base and drawing a walk, and Scardina hitting hit by a pitch and scoring two runs. Sean Richards singled, stole a base, and scored a run, as well.

Lions starter Joseph Lynn pitched and received a no-decision, tossing four innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking three, hitting a batter, and striking out five. Reliever Mike Regan got the loss, hurling 1.2 frames and allowing three runs (all earned) on four hits while striking out five.

Nassau jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the first courtesy of Sharp's steal of home, and RBI singles by Scardina and Stumpf. Bronx got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first when Torres' RBI single brought in Genao. After an inning of action, the Lions held a 3-1 advantage.

After the Lions went scoreless in the top of the second, the Broncos dented home plate twice in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Rodriguez's steal of home brought the hosts to within one (3-2), and Genao's RBI double to deep left knotted the contest at three apiece.

The Lions snatched the lead once again in the top of the third inning thanks to Caiden Siegel's RBI groundout, but the Broncos was again had an answer, drawing even in the bottom of the frame when Rosario Cruz worked a bases-loaded walk to square the NCAA Region XV contest at four-all.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Rodriguez hit a two-run homerun of Nassau reliever Mike Regan, as the Broncos took a 6-4 advantage. The hosts plated an insurance run later in the inning courtesy of Genao's RBI single. That made it 7-4 in favor of the Bronx, and that turned out to be the final score in the contest, as the umpires called the game after six innings due to darkness.

Next up for the Broncos

Bronx will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the team will head to Garden City, NY for a doubleheader against the Nassau Lions. Start-times for the games are scheduled for 12:00pm and 3:00pm.
