Bronx baseball struggles in recent home losses to Kingsborough, Nassau

The Broncos' baseball team dropped a pair of home games in recent days, falling to the Wave of Kingsborough Community College by a score of 17-13 on Monday afternoon, before suffered a 16-2 defeat (seven innings) to the Lions of Nassau on Tuesday. With that output, Bronx dipped to a mark of 9-15 on the 2025 campaign (2-3 CUNY C.C.C.), while Kingsborough improved to 17-7 (4-0 CUNY C.C.C.), and Nassau moved to 11-10.

Monday, April 14 - Kingsborough Wave 17, Bronx Broncos 13

In Monday's loss to the Wave, Justin Rosario Cruz was the Broncos' primary run producer, as he homered, hit a sacrifice fly, walked, drove in four runs, and dented home plate once. Robert Genao singled, walked twice, stole two bases, picked up three RBI, and scored three times. Luis Villaman doubled, singled, walked, drove in two runs, scored twice, and stole a base, and Juan Rodriguez tripled, singled, hit a sacrifice fly, swiped a bag, dented home plate twice, and drove in a run. Luis Torres added three singles while scoring a run and picking up a RBI.

Kevin Baez (1-4) got the start for the Broncos and struggled, but he was also victimized by some tough defense behind him. He took the loss on the afternoon, allowing 10 runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking two, hitting a pair of batters, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out one. One bright spot in relief for the Broncos was the performance of Anderson Puello Rosario, as he tossed 2.2 shutout innings, yielding just one hit and two walks while whiffing a batter.

The Broncos led 2-1 after an inning, but Kingsborough combined for 15 runs in its next three turns at-bat to take a commanding 16-2 advantage after 3.5 innings of action. Bronx wouldn't go down quietly, denting home plate six times in the bottom of the fourth, adding a run in each of the fifth and sixth frames, and three more in the eighth. That would be as close as the hosts would get, however, as the Wave tacked on a run in the ninth before advancing to win the game, 17-13.

Tuesday, April 15 – Nassau Lions 16, Bronx Broncos 2 (7 Innings)

Bronx managed just six hits in Tuesday's loss to the Lions. Genao was the only Bronco to register two hits, with the standout earning a double and a single. Villaman reached base three times, singling, walking twice, and scoring a run, and other Broncos to pick up singles on the afternoon were Rosario Cruz, Torres, and Giancarlo Leon.

Justin Martinez (1-3) got the start and took the loss for the Broncos, hurling 2.1 innings and allowing eight runs (all earned) on four hits while walking five, hitting a pair of batters, balking twice, and striking out three.

Pacing Nassau at the plate were Ariel Nunez and Carmine Scardina, as they picked up four RBI apiece. Nunez doubled and singled, while also stealing a base and scoring a run, and Scardina hit a three-run homer while walking three times, denting home plate four times, and stealing a base. Sean Richards doubled, singled, walked twice, stole a base, scored two runs, and picked up a RBI, and Caiden Siegel singled twice, walked twice, scored three times, and registered a RBI.

Brian Chin (3-2) was masterful on the hill for Nassau, earning the victory by tossing six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out 11.

Nassau plated two runs in the top of the first inning, courtesy of RBI singles by Richards and Siegel. The Lions tacked on another run in the top of the second when Eric Sharp trotted home via Martinez's balk. That gave Nassau a 3-0 advantage. Bronx got one back in the bottom of the third when, with a runner on first (Rosario Cruz) and nobody out, Torres singled to left field. Rosario Cruz attempted to take third base, reaching there safely, while the throw from the left fielder went into the Nassau dugout, allowing Rosario Cruz to come home and make it 3-1.

The rest of the game was all Nassau, as the Lions scored 13 unanswered runs from there. The visitors scored five times in the top of the third, with the key hits in the inning coming from Nunez (a two-RBI single) and Patrick Sebber (RBI single). After two-and-a-half innings of play, the Lions led 8-1. After another two-RBI single by Nunez in the fourth inning made it 10-0 Nassau, the Lions scored five more times in the fifth, highlighted by Scardina's long three-run blast. Nassau led 15-1 after five, and won the contest 16-2 after the mercy rule was triggered after seven frames.

Up Next for the Broncos

The Broncos now have a quick turnaround, as the team will travel to Brooklyn, NY tomorrow afternoon for a CUNY clash at Kingsborough. Start-time for the game is scheduled for 1:00pm.
