Bronx drops final three games of NJCAA Region XV series against Suffolk as Sharks clinch sweep

The Broncos' baseball team dropped three games over the weekend, falling to the Sharks of Suffolk by a score of 12-0 (seven innings) this past Friday in Selden, NY before dropping a doubleheader to the Sharks at Ohio Field by scores of 4-1 and 12-2 (five innings) on Saturday. With those three defeats, Bronx is now 3-11 on the 2025 season, while Suffolk improved to 14-7 on the year.

Friday, March 21, 2025 - Suffolk Sharks 12, Bronx Broncos 0 (seven innings)

Despite the loss for the Broncos this past Friday, Bronx registered just four hits, as Yael Bernard Familia, Juan Rodriguez, William Whitcomb, and Dario Vazquez picked up a single apiece.

Justin Martinez started and took the loss for Bronx, as he lasted just two innings and received the loss for the afternoon, allowing eight runs (two earned) on two hits while walking four. Relievers Kevin Baez and Acosta Vasquez Abel combined to allow just one earned run over four combined innings pitched.

Friday's scheduled nine-inning affair finalized after just seven innings after the Sharks induced the 10-run mercy rule. Suffolk plated two runs in the bottom of the first, three more in each of the second and third innings, two in the fourth, and a run apiece in the fifth and sixth.

Saturday, March 22, 2025 – Game 1 of DH – Suffolk Sharks 4, Bronx Broncos 1

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Bronx recorded just one run and two hits. Justin Rosario Cruz singled and drove in a run, and Giancarlo Leon added a single, as well. William Whitcomb stole a pair of bases and scored the home school's only run of the contest.

Hurler Anshel Novelo put forth a strong effort on the hill for the Broncos, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing just two runs (both earned) on two hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out three.

Bronx held a 1-0 advantage heading into the latter innings of the contest, but Suffolk plated two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings, completing a late comeback to edge the hosts.

Saturday, March 22, 2025 – Game 2 of DH – Suffolk Sharks 12, Bronx Broncos 2 (five innings)

Luis Torres singled twice, scored a run, picked up a RBI, and stole a base in the Broncos' game two loss on Saturday afternoon. William Whitcomb doubled and scored a run. Justin Perez tripled and drove in a run, and Juan Rodriguez picked up a triple.

Rosario Cruz got the start and picked up the loss for the Broncos, as he allowed eight runs (one earned) on six hits while issuing three walks, plunking two batters, and striking out one. One bright spot for the Broncos on the hill was the relief performance of Fernando Santiago, as he tossed two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

With the game knotted at a run apiece in the top of the third, the Sharks broke through for seven runs in the top of the third to snatch a commanding 8-1 advantage. Suffolk plated four more in the top of the fourth to increase their advantage to 11 runs, 12-1. The Broncos dented home plate once in the bottom of the fifth, but the Sharks were able to induce the 10-run mercy rule after five innings, closing the game out early.

Next up for the Broncos

The Broncos will resume their four-game homestand this Tuesday, as Bronx will welcome Dutchess to Ohio Field for a single game. Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
