Broncos defeated by Mustangs in another high-scoring affair at Ohio Field; Bronx now set to begin NJCAA Region XV action

The Bronx Broncos baseball team dropped a single game on Tuesday evening, falling to Monroe University's JV team by a score of 22-13 in eight innings, before the game was ended early due to a lack of sunlight. The game took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 3-7 on the 2025 campaign, while the visitors improved to a record of 2-6-1.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, three players registered multi-hit games, including sophomore William Whitcomb, as he was the team's primary run-producer on the day, as he recorded two singles while denting home plate once and driving in three runs. Jason Espinoza doubled and singled while scoring twice and picking up two RBI, and Luis Torres doubled, singled, and drove home two. Juan Rodriguez clocked his second homerun of the 2025 campaign, a two-run blast, and standout Robert Genaro reached base twice (single, walk) while denting home plate three times.

Offensively for the Mustangs in their victory, Monroe University JV registered a total of 13 hits while walking 14 times. Jeurys Cuevas reached base five times for the visitors, smacking a double while singling twice, drawing two walks, scoring two runs, stealing a base, and recording three RBI. Mario Bernard homered, doubled, walked, stole a base, scored four runs, and drove in four, and Vernon Hudson singled twice and picked up four RBI. Cesar Candelario also put forth a solid game, as he singled twice, scored three runs, picked up a RBI, and walked twice.

Yael Bernard Familia took the loss for the Broncos in his first action on the mound, as he allowed four earned runs on three walks while also yielding a hit, throwing a wild pitch, and balking once. One bright spot for the Bronx bullpen on the afternoon were the performances of Yoscar Rondon, Anshel Novelo, and Anderson Puello-Rosario, as each of those aforementioned hurlers tossed a scoreless inning for Bronx.

Juan Ramos earned the start and struggled for Monroe University JV, as he tossed four innings, allowing seven earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out a pair. Reliever Diego Arias earned the victory, as he hurled 1.1 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on no hits while walking two batters, hitting two, balking once, and striking out one.

The Mustangs took a commanding 6-0 lead in the first inning to set the tone for the game. With the bases loaded, Matthew DeFisher's walk brought home Cuevas to give the visitors a 1-0 edge. After Fernando Santiago came into the game with the bases loaded, Josh Peralta and Ronald Melo registered sacrifice flies to increase the Mustangs' edge to 3-0. The scoring for the inning was then capped by a RBI single by Bernard, and a two-RBI base hit by Hudson.

Justin Perez's one-on, two-out moonshot homerun to right field brought the Broncos to within four runs down in the bottom of the second inning (6-2), but in the top of the third, the Mustangs got those two aforementioned runs back when Cuevas picked up a clutch two-out, two-RBI double to right field. That gave the visitors their six-run advantage back, as Monroe University JV snatched an 8-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Broncos cut their deficit in half, thanks to a RBI groundout by Whitcomb, and a two-RBI ground rule double to right by Luis Torres. With three innings in the books, the Mustangs led by just three (8-5).

In the top of the fourth inning, with a runner on second base and two men out, Melo smacked a RBI double to make it 9-5 Monroe University JV, and Bernard's two-run homerun put the Mustangs up 11-5. Monroe University JV would plate a whopping six more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a commanding 17-5 advantage. That six-run fifth inning featured RBI hits by Candelario, Hudson, and Daniel German-Nero (his was a two-RBI single).

The Broncos dented home plate three times in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a RBI double by Espinoza, a Mustangs throwing error that allowed Espinoza to score, and a balk by Diego Arias that forced home a Broncos run. After five complete, Monroe University JV led 17-8.

After the Mustangs scored two more in the top of the sixth, their next three runs were scored via two bases loaded free passes, as well as a hit-batsman. Monroe University JV held a 22-8 advantage at this juncture of the ballgame, but the Broncos offense wouldn't quit.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos scored four more runs in a rally that was highlight by a RBI single by Espinoza, and a two-RBI base hit by Whitcomb. Bronx would add one final run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an error by Hudson that allowed a Broncos run to score with two outs.

After neither team plated a run in the eighth inning, the umpires decided to call the game due to the lack of sunlight with the evening just a few minutes short of 7:00pm.

The Broncos will now begin NJCAA Region XV play, as they'll start a four-game set with the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College. The first of four games will take place this Thursday in Selden, NY, with a start-time of 4:00pm.
