Broncos score 47 runs in three games, capture two out of three from Tigers at Ohio Field

In a three-game set the past two days that featured plenty of offense, the Broncos defeated the Tigers of Roxbury by Community College in two out of three contests. In a nine-inning game this past Friday, Bronx outlasted Roxbury by a score of 19-15. Yesterday, in a doubleheader, the Broncos were mercy-ruled by the Tigers 20-10 in five innings in the opener, before Bronx bounced back and defeated Roxbury 18-8 in six innings (mercy-rule shortened) in the second game. All games took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With that output, the Broncos are now 3-6 on the 2025 campaign, while the Tigers are 1-2.

Friday, March 14, 2025 – Bronx Broncos 19, Roxbury Tigers 15

Offensively for the Broncos in the series opener, Jason Espinoza led the way for the home school, registering a triple and a single while drawing a walk. He also scored three runs and drove in three. Robert Genao reached base five times, clocking a double while adding a single, walking twice, and getting hit by a pitch. He also stole two bases and scored four runs. Sophomore William Whitcomb singled, walked three times, dented home plate twice, and drove in four.

At the dish for Roxbury, Yoaldi Mejia doubled, singled three times, scored two runs, stole three bases, and drove in five runs. Francis Villalona homered, singled twice, walked, stole a base, scored four runs, and drove in four, and Marbel Soriano picked up a pair of singles, walked, scored two runs, stole a base, and drove in three.

On the hill for the Broncos, Frailin Jimenez (2-1) picked up the victory, tossing five frames and allowing four runs (only two earned) on seven hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out seven.

Roxbury's Alfry Merejildo (0-1) took the loss on the bump for the visitors, as he was rocked for eight runs (seven earned) in one-plus innings of action. He issued six walks, allowed two hits, and failed to strike out a batter.

After Villalona's two-run homerun in the top of the first gave Roxbury an early advantage, the Broncos answered back with 11 unanswered runs over the next two innings, denting home plate five times in the bottom of the first, and six more in the second.

The key run-producing hit in the bottom of the first came off of the bat of Espinoza, as his three-run triple gave drove home three runs, with Espinoza also scoring when centerfielder Michael Arias' throw to third was wide of the bag.

In the bottom of the second, a pair of two-RBI singles by Whitcomb and Adrian Pena highlighted Bronx's scoring barrage in the frame. After two innings of play, Bronx led 11-2.

The Tigers inched a run closer in the top of the fourth via a RBI single by Villalona, but later, in the bottom of the fifth, the Broncos tacked on three more runs (highlighted by RBI walks by Justin Rosario Cruz and Whitcomb) to take a commanding 14-3 advantage.

Bronx led 17-6 after six innings of play, before Roxbury put together a ferocious rally, scoring nine combined runs against Broncos reliever Anshel Novelo and Justin Martinez to incredibly pull to within two runs, 17-15. Marbel Soriano was the primary contributor for the visitors during that nine-run spurt, as his pair of singles drove in a combined three runs.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Broncos scored a pair of insurance runs when Justin Perez picked up a RBI single, with an additional run coming around to score in the person of Anderson Puello-Rosario courtesy of an error by Roxbury.

Fernando Santiago pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Broncos, not allowing a hit and walking two batters while striking out two.

Saturday, March 15, 2025 – Game 1 of DH – Roxbury Tigers 20, Bronx Broncos 10 (five innings)

Despite the loss in the opener of the doubleheader yesterday, Genao continued to see the baseball well, as he tripled, singled, walked, stole a base, scored three times, and drove in two. Luis Torres singled twice, dented home plate once, and drove in two, and Whitcomb doubled, singled, scored two runs, and picked up a RBI. Rosario Cruz and Giancarlo Leon each singled twice apiece, with Rosario Cruz driving in two, and Leon scoring twice.

Marbel Soriano was responsible for 25 percent of the team's RBI in the opener, as he registered five, singling three times. He also scored three runs, drew a walk, and stole a base. Yoldi Soriano reached base four times, as he singled twice, drew a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in three runs while also scoring three times. Yoaldi Mejia doubled, singled, drew a walk, stole a base, dented home plate three times, and drove in three.

Bronx starter Kevin Baez (0-2) struggled mightily on the mound for the Broncos, as he allowed 15 runs (all earned) in just 1.2 innings pitched, allowing 11 hits, hitting four batters, and issuing two walks.

Flores (1-0) picked up the complete-game victory for the Tigers, as he allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits while walking three, hitting a batter, and striking out one in five innings of work.

Roxbury, continuing to build on the offensive momentum it built in the latter stages of Friday's contest, plated 15 runs in the opening two innings, as the Tigers held a commanding 15-2 advantage after two.

Marbel Soriano and Yoldi Soriano each registered two RBI singles in the top of the first. Michael Arias earned a sacrifice fly, and Villalona capped the scoring for the inning with a RBI single to right field.

After the Broncos got two of those runs in the bottom of the first via RBI singles by Whitcomb and Torres, Roxbury plated eight more in the second, highlighted by RBI singles by Arias and Flores, a two-RBI single by Marbel Soriano, and a RBI double by Willy Lara.

In the bottom of the second, the Broncos scored four runs in a scoring barrage that was highlighted by a two-RBI single by Genao, and a run-producing single by Rosario Cruz. After two frames, Roxbury led 15-6.

Later, after four innings of action and the Tigers leading 17-9, the Tigers plated three runs in the top of the fifth via a two-RBI double by Mejia, and a run-producing single by Marbel Soriano, giving the visitors a 20-9 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, needing two runs to extend the game and avoid the mercy rule kicking-in, the Broncos were only able to plate one via a Rosario Cruz RBI single. With a runner on first base and two outs, Whitcomb flew out to left to end the game.

Saturday, March 15, 2025 – Game 2 of DH – Bronx Broncos 18, Roxbury Tigers 8 (Six Innings)

In Saturday's game-two victory for Bronx, Espinoza and Pena registered four and three RBI, respectively. Espinoza doubled, singled twice, was hit by a pitch, scored three runs, and drove in four. Pena reached base four times, as he doubled, singled, walked, stole three bases, was hit by a pitch, scored a run, and drove in three. Leon doubled, singled, walk, stole three bases, scored two runs, and drove in two. Luis Torres singled three times, was hit by a pitch, stole two bases, and scored three runs. Other Broncos registering multi-hit games were Leon, Rosario Cruz, and Genao.

Willy Lara picked up a double and a single for Roxbury while driving in three runs, and Janneson Martinez reached base three times, earning a single and drawing a walk, while also getting hit by a pitch. He scored a run and drove in two, as well.

Rosario Cruz got the victory on the hill for the Broncos, as he tossed five brilliant innings, allowing four runs (only one earned) on five hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out five.

Janneson Martinez took the loss on the bump for the Tigers in the second game, as he tossed three innings, allowing 11 runs (four earned) on 10 hits while walking a batter, hitting two batters, and striking out four.

Lara's two-RBI double to right field highlighted the Roxbury scoring in the first inning, as the Tigers led 3-0 after a half inning of action. The

Broncos answered right back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the frame (highlighted by RBI singles by Espinoza, Pena, and Villaman, and a RBI double by Justin Perez), as Bronx led by three after one inning (6-3).

Later, heading into the top of the sixth inning ahead 12-4, Roxbury battled back into the game by plating four runs to close its deficit to four runs (12-8). Elijah Thibodeaux's RBI double brought home one, and Thibodeaux came around to score on an error by Villaman. Martinez was hit by a pitch to force home the Tigers' seventh run, and Roxbury's eighth run came via a RBI fielder's choice by Lara.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Broncos scored six runs to trigger the 10-run mercy rule. Espinoza's triple to center field drove in two to make it 14-8, and that was followed-up by run-producing RBI singles by Rosario Cruz and Jose Perez. Pena's two-RBI double to left chased home two more runs, giving Bronx an 18-8 win.

Next up for the Broncos

The Broncos wrap-up a four-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon, as Bronx will take on the Monroe College JV team. Start-time between the Broncos and Mustangs from Ohio Field is scheduled for 3:00pm.
