Richter, Hattel, and Shihadeh score in double figures as Broncos drop '24-'25 home finale to Panthers

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped their home finale on Thursday evening, as Bronx lost a CUNY Conference game to the Panthers of BMCC by a score of 95-67. The contest took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 2-19 on the 2024-2025 campaign (0-10 CUNY). BMCC improved to 7-13 with the victory, including a mark of 5-4 in conference play.

In his finale home game in a Broncos uniform, Richter put forth a tremendous effort, posting a double-double with a team-high 19 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Additionally, the sophomore registered three assists. Alexander Hattel scored 18 points, dished six assists, tallied a team-best five steals, grabbed three rebounds, and swatted two shots, and Abraham Shihadeh connected on five shots from downtown, finalizing his evening with 15 points, four rebounds, and three steals.

BMCC was paced in its victory by Khalil Black's game-high 28 points to go along with 10 rebounds, seven dimes, and two steals. Ja'Lyn Griffin also registered a double-double with 18 points, a game-high 12 assists, and four rebounds. Zaden Henderson added 14 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks, and Brandon Duran contributed 11 points, two assists, and two steals.

Trailing 9-3 in the opening 3:09 of action, the Broncos rattled off seven consecutive points, courtesy of a three-point conversion by Shihadeh, and a bucket apiece by Hattel and Tyler Flagg, as Bronx snatched a 10-9 advantage.

Over the ensuing 9:28 of action, the teams exchanged the lead five times before BMCC took the lead for good, 23-22 on a three-point play by Emmanuel Agyei. The Panthers then scored another seven points, thanks to a converted layup by Black, a successful three-point play by Jarrell Tatum, and a hoop by Kimmeo Dixson. That made the score 30-22 in favor of the visitors, but a three-point bucket by Ousman Tunkara brought Bronx to within five (30-25) with 3:20 left in the half.

Later, leading 34-27, the visitors finished the half on a 6-0 run to take a commanding 40-27 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Four points by Henderson and a basket by Griffin accounted for the Panthers' points during that aforementioned run.

BMCC built a 23-point advantage (62-39) with 12:14 remaining in the game, but the Broncos used a pair of three-point conversions – one by Hattel and another by Shihadeh – to cut their deficit to 17, 62-45, with 9:58 left. Unfortunately for Bronx, that would be the closest it would get, as BMCC would score 29 of the next 44 points to take its largest lead of the game, a 31-point edge (91-60) with 2:21 left. The Panthers would go on to win by 28.

The Panthers connected on 42.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (35-82), while the Broncos earned a conversion rate of 38.1 percent (24-63). BMCC held a slim 45-43 edge on the glass, while also piling 29 assists on the night to Bronx's 18. The Panthers earned 19 steals, while the Broncos had nine, but Bronx held a 5-3 edge in blocked shots. BMCC took care of the basketball well, committing just nine turnovers while the hosts finished with 26.

Bronx will finalize its season on Saturday, February 15, as the Broncos will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY to battle Dutchess Community College. Start-time at the Falcon Hall Gymnasium is scheduled for 3:00pm.
