Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball sets tone for 2025-2026 campaign with dominant 68-41 victory over BMCC

Bronx Community College's women's basketball team head coach Craig Williams' second season is off to a blazing start, as last night, the Broncos dominated the Panthers of the Borough of Manhattan Community College by a score of 68-41 at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. The contest served as the opener for both squads, and was played in front of an energetic crowd that made its presence felt throughout the evening. Following the victory by the Broncos, Williams gave his thoughts.

"It's always ideal to come out on opening night and play as well as we did," Williams said. "We wanted to establish ourselves as a tough team to play against, and last night, I felt as though we did a great job of being tenacious and aggressive, and sharing the basketball. These women displayed confidence and showed great potential for what could be to come this season. We'll enjoy it, and get ready for Hostos on Thursday."

Newcomer Akira Robertson led the way for the Broncos on the evening, as she scored a game-high 13 points to go along with two rebounds and a pair of steals. Her twin sister, Akela Robertson, knocked down four of her six attempts from the floor to finish with 11 points, six rebounds, and a game-high five assists. Destiny Davis finalized her evening with a nice versatile effort, scoring 10 points, snatching five boards, dishing four assists, and swiping two steals. And finally, Ashley Hirado and Angelina Gonzalez finished with nine and eight points, respectively.

Despite the loss for the visitors, Crismeili Rodriguez scored a game-high 12 points to go along with two rebounds, a pair of assists, and two steals. Skyla Lawrence posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Kristiana Punina contributed nine points, 10 rebounds, and a game-high four steals, and two assists, and Lyric Maldonado finalized her evening with seven points, 12 rebounds, and two assists.

The Broncos established a big lead early and never looked back in the opener. Bronx led 17-4 after 10 minutes of action, and carried a 19-point advantage into the locker room at halftime (37-18). The third quarter was closely contested, with the Broncos outscoring BMCC by a slim margin, 13-11, before the hosts put up 18 points in the fourth while holding the opposition to 12.

Bronx earned a shooting percentage of 35.9 percent for the night (28-78), while holding the Panthers to just a 23 percent conversion rate (14-61). The Broncos dominated the assists (19-11) and steals (17-8) columns, while the Panthers held a slim 55-52 edge on the glass. BMCC shot 65 percent from the stripe (13-20), while Bronx misfired on 15 free throws (9-24, 37.5 percent).

The Broncos will look to make it two consecutive wins to start the 2025-2026 campaign on Thursday night, as the Bronx will make the short trip to Hostos for another CUNY conference game. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
