Men's basketball team drops pair of Region XV games to SUNY Ulster and Monroe University-Bronx

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped a pair of games in recent days, falling to the Senators of SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge, NY by a score of 89-51 this past Saturday, before returning to action three days later and dropping a home game to the Express of Monroe University-Bronx, 74-48. With the two defeats, Bronx dipped a mark of 2-16 on the 2024-2025 campaign. SUNY Ulster improved to 3-16 with its win, and Monroe University-Bronx upped its record to 14-8.

Despite the Broncos' loss to the Senators, Abraham Shihadeh scored a team-high 15 points while collecting four rebounds and swatting a pair of shots. Abraham Richter posted a double-double, netting 13 points and snatching a game-high 15 rebounds. His four blocks also led all players, and he added four assists, as well. Ousman Tunkara scored in double figures, contributing 10 points, and dishing a game-high seven assists. He also contributed four steals, as well. Finally, Alexander Hattel finalized his afternoon with nine points, five dimes, and four steals.

SUNY Ulster was paced by Chris Herrera, as he drained three triples, finishing with a game-high 17 points. He also snatched four boards, dished three assists, and swiped three steals. Shemar McDonald nearly tallied a double-double, scoring 14 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and dishing four assists, and Terrence Strange (5-6 FG) added 13 points and four boards. Finally, it was Jacob Strange and Dylan Perez contributing 12 points apiece, with Jacob Strange also adding eight rebounds, four dimes, and three steals.

The Senators took control of the game in the first half, outscoring the Broncos 53-23. SUNY Ulster gradually continued to build its lead in the final session, netting 36 points to Bronx's 28 to account for the 38-point margin of victory.

SUNY Ulster was the far more efficient team shooting the basketball on the afternoon, connecting on 60.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (35-58), while Bronx earned a 33.3 percent conversion rate (18-54). The Senators held a healthy 42-30 edge on the glass, while also dishing 23 assists to the Broncos' 17. Bronx did hold advantages in steals (12-11) and blocked shots (6-3), while winning the turnover battle as well. The Broncos only committed seven miscues on the day to SUNY Ulster's 15.

Despite the Broncos' setback to the Express, Richter scored a team-high 13 points (5-5 FT) while snatching eight rebounds and blocking a pair of shots. Matayus Kola netted 12 points, dished five assists, grabbed four rebounds, and added a steal, and Shihadeh and Tyler Flagg scored seven points apiece, with Shihadeh's 11 rebounds serving as a team-high.

Monroe University-Bronx was led by Dimitre Alson (9-15 FG), as he scored a game-high 20 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing four assists. He also added two steals, as well. Haley Guillen finished with 12 points, four assists, three steals, two rebounds, and a pair of swatted shots. Rene Williams netted 11 points while collecting seven rebounds, and David Malone nearly posted a double-double, scoring nine points and snatching 12 rebounds.

The Broncos built an early 11-7 advantage in the opening 5:39 of the contest, highlighted by Kola's four points, but the Express put together a 15-2 run in a span of 6:48, capped off by a 3-point field goal by Haley Guillen with 6:30 left before the break, to give Monroe the lead for good at 22-13. 

Late in the first half, the Broncos cut their deficit to four thanks to a successful shot from long range by Shihadeh to make the score 22-18 with 4:23 left. Monroe finished the half strong by scoring the last five points of the stanza, including a jump shot by Jayquan Lee with one second left, to send the visitors into the locker room with a 27-18 advantage.

The Express' strong finish to the first half carried over into the second as Monroe scored 17 unanswered points to start the period, which completed a 26-0 run that began during the closing minutes of the first half, to take a commanding 44-18 hold with 14:13 remaining in regulation time. The Express held the Broncos scoreless for 10:45 of game time and to without a field goal for 11:17. Monroe built its lead to 30 on its way to the 74-48 win.

Monroe University-Bronx earned a conversion rate of 39.5 percent for the game (32-81), while the Broncos connected on 30.4 percent of their shots for the evening (17-56). The Express held a 52-40 edge on the glass, while also dishing 21 assists to the Broncos' 10. The visitors also held advantages in steals (14-4) and blocked shots (5-3) while winning the turnover battle (committing 12 to the Broncos' 24).

Bronx will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Broncos will welcome the Queensborough Tigers to the Alumni Gymnasium for a CUNY Conference game. Start-time at the Alumni Gymnasium is scheduled for 8:00pm.
