Women's basketball overwhelmed by Monroe University-Bronx in Region XV action Tuesday evening

The Broncos' women's basketball team suffered a defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to Monroe University-Bronx at the Alumni Gymnasium by a score of 85-27. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the loss, the Broncos dipped to 4-11 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Express improved to 13-8.  

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Angelina Gonzalez led the way for the hosts with team-highs of seven points and three steals. She also added three rebounds, as well. Yahannis Martinez and Taylar Hill each scored six points, with Martinez grabbing a game-high nine rebounds, and Hill finalizing her evening with three boards.

In the victory for Monroe University-Bronx, Beverly Williams drained four triples, finishing with a game-high 24 points. Her eight steals also tied her for the game-high, and she dished three assists as well. Salimah Williams added 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals, and Makira Bunsie and Tymere Moorer netted 11 points each. Bunsie grabbed seven rebounds, and Moorer finished with four assists and three steals.

Monroe outscored Bronx CC, 25-0, during the opening quarter. The Express extended their lead to 28-0, on a 3-point field goal by Cheyenne Hoxie before the Broncos finally scored their first two points of the contest 2:20 into the second quarter on a bucket by Gonzalez. Monroe-University Bronx led by as many as 33 in the second quarter before taking a 41-10 edge into the locker room at halftime.

The domination by the visitors continued in the second half, as the Express outscored the Broncos 44-17, allowing just six BCC field goals over the final 20 minutes of action.

Monroe University-Bronx was the far more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Express connected on 35 of its 71 shots from the floor (49.3 percent), while the Broncos earned a conversion rate of just 29 percent (9-31). The Express held a 47-22 edge on the glass, while piling 37 steals to Bronx's 11. The teams combined for 85 turnovers, with Monroe University-Bronx accounting for 34, and the hosts committing 51.

The Broncos will get back to work on Thursday evening, as Bronx will play a CUNY road match at Hostos Community College. Start-time at the Swamp is scheduled for 6:00pm.
