Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos defeated by Sharks in Region XV game Tuesday afternoon at Ohio Field

On a cold, cloudy afternoon at Ohio Field in the Bronx, the Broncos' baseball team continued its recent struggles, dropping its fifth consecutive game by falling to the Sharks of Suffolk by a score of 23-1 in Region XV action. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to a mark of 8-20 on the 2024 campaign, while the Sharks improved to a record of 27-16.

After neither squad was able to push across a run over the opening two innings, Suffolk broke through for two runs in the third against Bronx ace pitcher Wilber Batista. With runners on second and third and one out, Jake Tannenbaum singled to right field, scoring Dominic LaFroscia. The next batter, Dioscar Cuello, doubled home William Winter to give the visitors a 2-0 edge.

Steven Santos took over in the fourth inning, relieving Wilber Batista, who is the team's probable starter for this Monday's CUNYAC title game against Kingsborough Community College. Suffolk's offense took advantage of Batista's departure, denting home plate four times in the fourth to extend its advantage to 6-0. Those aforementioned four runs came courtesy of an RBI double by Winter, an RBI triple by Tannenbaum, and RBI singles by Cuello and Joseph Lomonaco.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Sharks put the game out of reach. Broncos pitcher Justin Martinez came on in relief of Steven Santos, and he struggled from the jump. Suffolk sent 14 men to the plate in the fifth, with every member of the lineup denting home plate once apiece. The frame was highlighted by RBI singles by Lucas Quinlan, Tannenbaum, Cuello, and Lomanaco, as well as a two-RBI base hit by Ryan
Sitler. After four and a half innings of play, Suffolk led 15-0.

Bronx got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning, staging a modest two-out rally. With two Broncos retired, Juan Rodriguez drew a walk, and Frailin Jimenez reached via an error. Joel Salcedo followed that by earning a free pass, and Euniel De La Rosa then produced the home team's lone RBI of the afternoon, singling to center to bring home Rodriguez. Steven Santos then grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

Suffolk's potent offense outscored the Broncos 8-0 over the final two innings of the game. Luke Buyes registered a two-RBI double in the sixth. Kevin Jeran cleared the bases in the seventh with a three-RBI double, and later in the frame, Buyes registered an RBI single (with an additional run crossing the plate on a Bronx error). The Sharks' final run of the day came via Dominick Viggiano's run-scoring double.

The Broncos only registered one hit over the final two innings, and when the final out was recorded in the seventh (a Salcedo strikeout), the mercy rule was triggered, giving Suffolk the seven-inning victory.

Batista (2-3) took the loss for the Broncos on the field, tossing three frames and allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits while walking three, hitting a batter, and striking out three. Steven Santos (four earned runs) and Martinez (15 earned runs) struggled in relief of Batista.

Offensively for the Broncos, De La Rosa's fifth inning single produced the team's only RBI for Bronx. Rodriguez was the only Bronx player to reach base more than once, as he reached three times, via a single, walk, and an error.

Jacob Galaz was masterful on the hill for the visiting Sharks, earning the victory (6-5) while tossing six innings, allowing just one run (unearned) on three hits and walking three batters while striking out nine.

Seven players registered multiple RBI's for the visitors, with Cuello, Buyes, and Jeran tying for the game-high of three. Cuello picked up three hits, including a double and a pair of singles. He also scored two runs and walked. Buyes doubled, singled, and scored a run, and Jeran singled and scored. Tannenbaum had himself a tremendous game, hitting a triple, registering two singles, scoring a game-high four runs, driving in two, and walking twice. Winter (three runs scored, two RBI's), Lomonaco (two RBI's), Sitler (three runs scored, two RBI's, two walks), LaFroscia (three hits, two runs scored, RBI), Quinlan (two runs scored, two hits, RBI), and Viggiano (two runs scored, two hits, RBI, walk) all had very productive days at the dish, as well.

Bronx will look to avenge today's loss against Suffolk on Friday afternoon, as the Broncos welcome the Sharks back to Ohio Field for another game. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
