Bronx silenced by Suffolk in home finale; Four sophomores honored/saluted in pregame ceremony

The Bronx Community College baseball team played its regular season home finale on Friday afternoon, falling to the Sharks of Suffolk Community College by a score of 11-0 in the seven innings at Ohio Field. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to a record of 8-21 on the 2024 campaign, while the Sharks improved their record to 28-16.

Prior to the game, the institution's Department of Athletics and the baseball program took a few moments to honor four sophomores who had given so much to the program during their tenures on the team, including Alex Lisandro Gomez, Steven Santos, Raul Chevalier, and Euniel De La Rosa. Each student-athlete was presented with commemorative picture frame photos by Head Coach Adolfo DeJesus and Associate Head Coach Orosmar Cuevas.

When the game got underway, Suffolk scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Fabian Oviedo Finol drew a walk to bring home a run. Two more Sharks came around to score when Ryan Sitler reached via an error by Steven Santos. After a half an inning, Suffolk led 3-0.

The Sharks added two more runs in the top of the second courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Dominic LaFroscia and an RBI triple by Lucan Quinlan. That increased the visitors' edge to 5-0. That aforementioned score would stay the same until the top of the fourth, when Suffolk plated a run against Broncos ace Wilber Batista, courtesy of an RBI groundout by Quinlan.

Suffolk dented home plate once in the top of the sixth, and four more times in the seventh. The notable run-producing play in the seventh came when Will Winter registered a two-RBI single off Broncos reliever Oscar Rosas. After six and a half innings, the Sharks held a commanding 11-0 edge. Bronx failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, triggering the 10-run mercy rule after seven, and essentially ending the contest.

For the Broncos, Gomez turned in a respectable effort on the day he was honored, tossing three frames and allowing five runs (only two earned) on three hits while walking three, hitting a batter, and striking out one. Batista twirled one inning of relief and allowing one run, and Yadiel Santos and Frailin Jimenez combined to allow to just one run (unearned) and one hit over two frames.

Bronx's offense produced to just one hit on the afternoon, a single by Chevalier. Cristhian Gonzales was the only Bronco to reach base twice, as he drew two walks.

Jack Turner got the start for the Sharks, and he kept the Broncos off balance throughout the afternoon, earning the victory by tossing a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit, walking six, hitting one batter, and striking out 14.

Offensively for the Sharks, Winter produced a game-high two base hits, both singles. He also drew two walks, scored a pair of runs, and picked up two RBI's. Quinlan tripled, walked twice, dented home plate once, and drove in two, and Finol doubled, scored a run, walked, and registered one RBI.

The Broncos will wrap-up their regular season portion of the 2024 schedule on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx travels to Selden, NY to battle the Sharks in a doubleheader. Start-time for game one is scheduled for 12:00pm.
