Game Recap: Baseball |

Bronx wins much-needed series, capturing two out of three from CUNYAC rival BMCC

The Broncos' baseball team won a critical weekend series, taking two out of three games from CUNYAC Borough of Manhattan Community College. This past Friday afternoon, the Broncos defeated the Panthers by a score of 30-8. A day later in a doubleheader, Bronx dropped the opener of a doubleheader to BMCC 9-4, before turning around and capturing a victory in a thriller, outlasting the Panthers by a score of 9-8. All games took place at Ohio Field on the campus of Bronx Community College.

With that aforementioned output, the Broncos improved to a mark of 4-9 on the 2024 campaign (2-5 CUNYAC), while BMCC is now 2-8 on the year (2-4 in conference action).

April 5, 2024 – Bronx 30, BMCC 8 (7 Innings)

In a wild series-opener this past Friday, the Broncos plated a whopping 30 runs, dominating the game from start to finish to register their first conference victory of the 2024 season.

Bronx, serving as the visiting team on its own field, plated nine runs in the top of the first to set the tone for the CUNYAC clash. BMCC did answer with four runs in the bottom half of the frame to slice Bronx's edge to 9-4, but the Broncos added another four runs in the top of the second to take a commanding 13-4 lead.

Later, leading 19-7 heading into the top of the fifth, Bronx started to pour it on, plating another nine runs to take a 28-7 lead. The Broncos eventually won the game by 22 runs (30-8).

Incredibly, the Broncos plated that barrage of runs using just nine hits, including a double and eight singles. Bronx's patience at the plate saw the Broncos draw 22 walks, however. Cristhian Gonzales had a terrific day at the dish leading Bronx, registering a double and a single, walking three times, denting home plate four times, and driving in four runs. Brayan Rubio singled twice, scored two runs, drove in three, walked, and was hit by a pitch. Yadiel Santos singled, walked, scored twice and picked up four RBI's, and Juan Rodriguez singled, walked four times, scored five runs, and drove in four.

Frailin Jimenez pitched four innings and picked up the victory for Bronx, allowing seven runs (only two earned) on six hits while walking five and striking out four. Steven Santos did a fantastic job in relief, tossing three frames and allowing just one run (unearned) on two hits while walking one and striking out five.

The Panthers collected nine hits on the afternoon, led by Michael Marra and Jeffrey Roldan, who both recorded two singles apiece. Wiljer Casana drove in a team-high two runs, and Marra and Christian Sidriyen each dented home plate twice. Nassaiah Flores ripped a triple in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Casana and Peter Rodriguez Reyes also had a hit.

Jose Miguel De Jesus Lebron took the loss for the Panthers, as he allowed six runs without registering an out. He walked four batters and hit two, with all of those aforementioned batters eventually coming around to score. Rodriguez-Reyes pitched 3.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on three hits, issuing nine walks and striking out two. Conall Moore struggled as well, giving up 11 runs (four earned) on six hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

April 6, 2024 – Game 1 of DH – BMCC 9, Bronx 4 (7 Innings)

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Broncos recorded nine hits, including two apiece by Yadiel Santos and Steven Santos. Yadiel doubled twice, drove in two runs, and stole a base, and Steven doubled, singled, and swiped a bag.

Wilber Batista took the loss on the hill for the Broncos, tossing 4.1 frames and allowing seven runs (five earned) on five hits while walking six batters and striking out nine. Justin Martinez held his own in 2.2 innings of relief contributions, allowing two runs (both unearned) on two hits while walking four, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out three.

BMCC used seven hits and 10 walks to score nine runs in the opener, led by Casana who doubled twice, scored three runs, and drove in a run. He also stole two bases, as well. Miguel doubled, singled, drove in two runs, and stole two bases, and Flores singled and picked up two RBI's.

Marino pitched a complete game in getting the victory for BMCC, hurling seven frames and allowing four runs (all earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out 10.

The Panthers plated two runs in the top of the first inning utilizing back-to-back walks from Marino and Jeffrey Roldan to get two aboard with no outs. Marino was brought across home plate with Roldan when Flores registered a clutch two-out double to right field to give BMCC an early 2-0 advantage. Casana grounded out to second to end the threat as the Broncos kept the damage at a minimum.

Marino struck out Frailin Jimenez in the leadoff spot to start the bottom of the first before allowing consecutive hits. Steven Santos doubled and Brayan Rubio singled to left field before Yadiel Santos drove them in on a one-out double to center field to tie the game at two apiece. Marino struck out the next two batters and three of the six he faced in the inning to keep the game tied.

Later, in the the top of the fourth, Casana reached on an error, Rodriguez-Reyes earned a walk, and DeJesus Lebron was hit by a pitch to load up the bases with one out. Marino then registered a two-run single to put BMCC up 4-2. The score would stay that way until the fifth, when the Panthers began pulling away. BMCC added three runs in the fifth to take a 7-2 advantage. Sidriyen led off the inning with a walk before Casana recorded an RBI double to right field, scoring him to make it 5-2. Irizarry then sliced a double to center field to score Casana and make it 6-2. DeJesus Lebron connected for an RBI single to bring Irizarry home and extend the Panther lead to 7-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.

The Broncos got two in the bottom of the fifth to get within three, 7-4, on a Santos RBI single, followed by Santos later stealing home. The Panthers responded by plating two runs in the top of the inning to make it 9-4. Lebron reached on an error, grabbing his second RBI of the day, and then Marra walked in to make it 9-4. Marino closed the door in the bottom of the seventh retiring three straight batters after allowing a leadoff single to complete the 9-4 victory for BMCC in game one.

April 6, 2024 – Game 2 of DH – Bronx 9, BMCC 8 (7 Innings)

Leading the way offensively for the Broncos in the series finale was Brayant Taylor, as he doubled, singled, and drove in three runs. Justin Martinez tripled, walked twice, scored two runs, and drove in one. Yadiel Santos singled, scored twice, stole two bases, walked twice, and picked up an RBI, and Gonzales singled, stole two bases, and scored two runs.

The Panthers fell in game two despite piling 12 hits. Casana and Lebron both recorded multi-hit games. Flores recorded two hits including a triple, and Marino registered his multi-hit game performance. Four other Panthers recorded a hit in the game as well, with Marra, Sidriyen, Isaiah Jerry, and Adonis Suarez all earning one apiece.

BMCC erased a 6-0 deficit, plating seven runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-6 advantage heading into the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Cristhian Gonzales was able to reach on an error by DeJesus Lebron, bringing home Rubio, to knot the CUNYAC clash at seven runs apiece. After Raul Chevalier reached on a dropped third strike, Taylor recorded a two-RBI double to left field to put the Broncos back in the lead 9-7.

In the top of the seventh, Casana worked a lead-off walk, and Sidriyen reached on an error to put two aboard with one out. Sidriyen was thrown out trying to steal second, but Flores would get BMCC within one, 9-8, with an RBI triple to left field, scoring Casana. Roldan then flew out to the Jimenez to end the game and give Bronx Community College 9-8.
