Bronx baseball suffers three losses to Express over the weekend, pushing losing skid to four games

The Broncos' baseball team suffered three losses in recent days to borough foe Monroe College-Bronx, losing to the Express by a score of 12-2 on Friday afternoon (eight innings), before dropping a pair of seven inning affairs by scores of 17-8 and 15-6. With the losses, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 8-19 on the 2024 campaign, while the Express jumped over the .500 mark, improving to 19-18.

Friday, April 26, 2024: Monroe-Bronx 12, Bronx C.C. 2

In Friday afternoon's contest, Monroe-Bronx wasted no time jumping out to an early advantage, denting home plate twice in the top of the first. Giovanny Torres registered a two-RBI single to give the visitors a 2-0 edge. The Express later added four runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Yan Ortiz Torres, to increase its advantage to six runs (6-0).
 
In the top of the third, Edwin Manaya Jr. drove in Camilo Rodriguez from second with an RBI double to extend the Express' lead to 7-0. He later came around to score on Alfredo Jimenez Jr.'s RBI single. On that aforementioned play, Jimenez Jr. came all the way around to score on a fielding error to boost the Express' commanding edge to 9-0. Later in the frame, Ortiz Torres hit a sacrifice fly to right which scored Joeliel Cruz from to third to put Monroe up 10-0. 

Bronx Community College got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Juan Rodriguez's RBI bunt single scored Euniel De La Rosa from third base, and later in the frame, Frailin Jimenez registered a sacrifice fly, scoring Steven Santos, to slice the Broncos' deficit to eight runs, at 10-2.

Monroe-Bronx plated a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings before shutting down the Broncos in the bottom of the eighth to end the game. The mercy rule triggered following the completion of the eighth inning, with the visitors holding a 10-run advantage.

The Broncos registered just four hits on the afternoon, with Euniel De La Rosa registering two of them. He doubled, singled, and score a run. Rodriguez singled, picked up an RBI, and stole a base, and Steven Santos singled and scored a run.

Oscar Rosas got the start and took the loss for Bronx, hurling six innings and allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits while issuing five walks and striking out four batters. Joel Salcedo pitched well in relief, twirling two frames and allowing just one earned run on one hit while also striking out a batter.

Offensively for Monroe-Bronx, Minaya Jr. went 2-for-3. Cruz also picked up a pair of hits, stole two bases, scored a pair of runs, and drew a walk. Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio sliced a double, picked up an RBI, dented home plate twice, drew a walk, and stole a base. Ortiz Torres scored twice, stole a pair of bases, and drew a walk. Flores produced two hits, while Hecxiel Perez reached base with a single. Rodriguez doubled and walked. Jimenez Jr. earned a base on balls and stole a base. 

Didier Hernandez (3-1) put forth a sensational effort for the Express on the hill, earning a complete-game victory by striking out 12 batters and giving up just one earned run on four hits in eight innings pitched.

Saturday, April 27, 2024, Game 1 of DH: Monroe-Bronx 17, Bronx C.C. 8

Saturday's doubleheader took place at Ohio Field on the campus of Bronx Community College, with the Express serving as the home school. After both teams failed to push across any runs for the first inning and a half, the Express broke through for four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead.

Rodriguez's RBI single scored Perez, accounting for the first of Monroe-Bronx's runs. Cruz then produced a pair of runs on a two-RBI single through the left side, pushing the Express' edge to 3-0, and Bryant Quezada capped the scoring for the inning with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-0 Monroe.

The Express added five more runs in the bottom of the third, producing runs in a variety of ways. Rodriguez and Giovanny Flores recorded RBI singles in the inning. Albertori drew a walk with the bases loaded to push across a run. Cruz registered a sacrifice fly, and Yan Ortiz Flores was hit by a pitch with the bags full to add another run. After three complete innings, Monroe-Bronx held a commanding 9-0 edge.

Bronx scored five runs in the top of the fourth, taking advantage key Express errors. With runners on first and second, Cristhian Gonzales laid down a bunt. Monroe pitcher Jonathan Rondon fielded it and threw it wildly past the first baseman and down the right field line. Yadiel Santos and Brayan Rubio, who were both on base, motored home, with Gonzales right behind them, as the Broncos pulled to within six runs at 9-3.

Later in the frame, with the base loaded and one man out, De La Rosa hit a grounder to shortstop Yan Ortiz Torres, who stepped on second base for the force out, but his throw to first was wild, allowing both Salcedo and Rodriguez to score, as Bronx pulled to within four at 9-5.

Fast forwarding to the bottom of the fifth inning, Monroe-Bronx led 11-6 before plating four runs to take a commanding 15-6 advantage. Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to drive home one of those aforementioned runs. Albertori brought home two more with a two-RBI single, and Cruz capped the scoring for the frame by drawing a walk with the bases loaded.

The Broncos refused to quit, plating two runs in the top of the sixth inning. The first came courtesy of an error on a pickoff attempt that allowed Brayant Taylor to score from second base, and the other run was courtesy of Steven Santos' theft of home. That brought Bronx to within seven runs at 15-8. Monroe-Bronx answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead 17-8, and that would finalize all scoring for game one.

Offensively for the Broncos, Yadiel Santos reached base three times, hitting a triple and walking twice. Rodriguez singled, scored a run, picked up an RBI, and walked, and Rubio, Gonzalez, and Taylor all singled and scored runs.

Yadiel Santos (1-2) struggled on the mound for the Express, allowing 15 runs (14 earned) on 12 hits while walking 10 and striking out two.

At the dish for the Express, Rodriguez produced a game-high three hits, singling three times, scoring three runs, driving home three, and drawing a walk. Yan Ortiz Torres reached base four times, picking up a pair of singles, earning two walks, denting home plate twice, and driving in a run. Albertorio and Cruz each earned four RBI's on the day, with both of those aforementioned players hitting a single and earning a sacrifice fly. Albertorio also scored three runs and walked twice, while Cruz dented home plate once and walked once. Finally, it was Perez and Gregory Espinal each picking up two hits (a double and a single apiece). Perez scored twice, picked up an RBI, and walked, while Espinal dented home plate three times, drove home one, and walked twice.

Jonathan Rondon got the start for Monroe-Bronx, tossing 3.1 innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out four. Kevin Montes relieved him and picked up the victory, registering five outs and allowing just one run (earned) on one hit while also hitting a batter.

Saturday, April 27, 2024, Game 2 of DH: Monroe-Bronx 15, Bronx C.C. 6

In game two, Monroe-Bronx plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of an RBI double by Flores, a two-RBI double by Perez, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cruz. Down 4-0 head into the top of the second, the Broncos stormed back, denting home plate four times to knot the score at four apiece.

Two-RBI singles off the bats of Euniel De La Rosa and Steven Santos accounted for the run production for the Broncos in that frame.
Monroe-Bronx re-took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five times to snatch a commanding 9-4 advantage. The highlight of Monroe's big inning was a two-run homer to left by Elio Sanchez. Earlier in the inning, Rodriguez produced an RBI single and Minaya Jr. launched an RBI triple down the left-field line which scored Rodriguez.

Monroe – Bronx continued to add to its commanding edge in the bottom of the third with two runs, highlighted by an RBI single from Flores. After three complete, the Express led 11-4.
 
The Broncos continued to hang around in the fourth as they scored two runs to pull to within five runs at 11-6. The highlight of the inning for Bronx came off the bat of Yadiel Santos who registered an RBI single.

The Express pulled away for good in the bottom fourth by denting home plate three times.  Antwon Beverly opened the scoring in the inning with an RBI single. Three batters later, Flores came up with the bases loaded. He singled to center and advanced to second on a fielding error. Three runs came in to score and extend Monroe's hold to 15-6. Flores was credited with two RBIs on the play. In the top of the seventh, José Capellán came out of the bullpen for Monroe – Bronx and retired the side in order, including two strikeouts, to clinch the sweep for the Express.

Offensively for the Broncos in the game, Euniel De La Rosa registered a team-high three RBI's, registering a single while also scoring two runs. Steven Santos singled and drove in two runs, and Yadiel Santos had the only multi-hit game for Bronx, singling twice and driving in a run. Taylor accounted for the team's only extra-base hit of the game, hitting a triple.

De La Rosa started on the hill for Bronx and struggled mightily, lasting just four innings and allowing 15 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits while hitting five batters, walking three, and striking out one. Kyler Almanzar pitched two solid innings in relief, not allowing a run and yielding just one hit while walking three and striking out two.

At the plate for the Express, Flores went 4-for-5, including two doubles, produced four runs batted in, stole a base, and scored. Alicea Albertorio scored four times, executed a base hit, and stole a bag. Ortiz Torres singled, drove in a run, and scored three times. Hecxiel Peres provided three RBIs, while Rodriguez drew two walks. Minaya Jr. scored twice and earned a base on balls. Cruz walked and stole a base. Beverly crossed home plate twice, worked two walks, and stole a pair of bases. 

On the mound, Luis Roman earned the win in relief for Monroe as he struck out two batters and gave up just one earned run in 4.2 innings pitched.

Sharks to invade Ohio Field Tuesday afternoon

The Broncos will look to halt their four-game losing skid on Tuesday afternoon, as Bronx will welcome the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College to Ohio Field. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 3:30pm.
