Broncos overmatched by Express on Tuesday afternoon, managing just three baserunners in shutout defeat

The Bronx Broncos baseball team suffered a defeat on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Express of Monroe College-Bronx by a score of 32-0 in a mercy rule-induced seven inning affair. The contest took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to a mark of 8-16 on the 2024 campaign, while the Express improved to 16-18.

Although the Express plated 32 runs, the big story of the day was the history made by Arian Quezada, as the standout pitcher became the second member of the Express during this 2024 campaign to toss a no-hitter. Quezada allowed just three baserunners for the afternoon – walking two batters and hitting one. He struck out 13 batters along the way, and improved his record to 4-1 on the season.

Monroe-Bronx wasted no time jumping ahead early, denting home plate four times in the top of the first. Hecxiel Perez's two-RBI double brought home the Express' first two runs, and later in the inning, Edwin Minaya Jr. laced a two-run single to extend Monroe's advantage to 4-0.

The Express scored another eight runs in the top of the second, highlighted by RBI singles by Perez, Camilo Rodriguez, and Antwon Beverly. Monroe–Bronx scored a run in the fourth and then added three more in the fifth to pad its cushion to 16-0. Perez once again produced an RBI single during the Express' productive fifth inning.

Monroe's most productive inning at the dish came in the top of the sixth, as the visitors plated 13 runs. Rodriguez, Beverly, and Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio each drew a walk with the bases loaded to earn an RBI. Alfredo Jimenez Jr. tallied an RBI single, and Giovanny Flores picked up an RBI double, and Minaya Jr. drove in two runs with a single.

In the top of the seventh, Flores picked up an RBI single and Rodriguez drove in two runs courtesy of a double to increase Monroe's edge to 32-0. Quezada finished off his no-hitter in the bottom of the frame, registering the last out on a force out at second base.

For Monroe at the dish, Yan Ortiz Torres scored six runs, drew four walks, stole five bases, and picked up an RBI. Flores also scored six runs, while drawing three walks, earning two runs batted in, and stealing a duo of bases. Perez went 3-for-4, picked up five RBIs, scored four runs, earned a base on balls, and stole a base.

Rodriguez added four RBIs, scored just as many times, drew three walks, and picked up a stolen base. Jimenez Jr. scored four times, drove in a pair of runs, and walked twice. Minaya Jr. produced six runs batted in, scored twice, and stole a base.

Also producing impressive offensive numbers for the Express was Joeliel Cruz who singled, drove in a run, crossed home plate twice, drew a walk, and stole a base. Alicea Albertorio had two hits, scored twice, and earned a base on balls. Beverly scored two runs, hit a pair of singles, drew two walks, stole a pair of bases, and drove in two runs.

For the Broncos, Brayan Rubio, Frailin Jimenez, and Cristhian Gonzales reached base once apiece. Rubio and Jimenez walked, and Gonzales was hit by a pitch.

Justin Martinez (1-2) got the start on the mound for the hosts and took the defeat, twirling four innings and allowing 14 runs (eight earned) on seven hits while walking eight batters, hitting four, and striking out three.

Bronx will look for redemption on Friday afternoon, as the Broncos will once again host Monroe-Bronx at Ohio Field. Start-time for the game is scheduled for 3:30pm.
