Bronx overwhelms BMCC 14-4, clinches spot in 2024 CUNYAC title game against Kingsborough

The Broncos' baseball team picked up a pivotal CUNYAC victory on Monday afternoon, defeating the Panthers of the Borough of Manhattan Community College by a score of 14-4. The contest took place at Ohio Field, with the Broncos serving as the visiting team. With the victory, Bronx improved to 8-15 on the 2024 campaign (6-6 CUNYAC), while the Panthers dipped to 2-16 on the year (2-10 CUNYAC).

Bronx's victory means that the Broncos are heading to the CUNYAC championship game for the fifth consecutive season. The squad has competed in the title game every year since 2018 (the 2020 and 2021 campaigns were canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic). The '24 title game will feature the No. 2 seeded Broncos taking on the No. 1 seeded Wave of Kingsborough Community College. The game will take place on the campus of K.C.C.

In Monday's win over the Panthers, the Broncos rallied from a 2-0 deficit, plating a run in the top of the third, and three more in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage. Bronx wouldn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game from there. The Broncos held a 6-4 advantage heading into the final three innings, and outscored the Wave 8-0 from there to win the game by 10 runs (14-4).

The Broncos compiled seven hits and 10 walks on the day in producing their 14 runs. Three players recorded multi-hit games, including Brayan Rubio, Cristhian Gonzales, and Juan Rodriguez. Rubio doubled, singled, scored a run, and registered a game-high three RBI's. Gonzalez doubled, singled, dented home plate twice, drove in a run, walked, and stole a base, and Rodriguez singled twice, scored two runs, picked up an RBI, and walked. Moises Ortega, despite not registering a hit, scored four runs, stole three bases, and drove in two.

Oscar Rosas hurled the first four innings for the Broncos, picking up the victory, allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits while walking three and whiffing three. Joel Salcedo registered five outs in relief, allowing just one earned run on two walks and a strikeout, and Wilber Batista was masterful to finish the game, tossing 3.1 frames, not allowing a run or a hit while issuing one walk and striking out five.

Peter Rodriguez Reyes was BMCC's pacesetter offensively, as he posted team-highs of three runs scored and two hits (both singles). He also stole two bases and drew a walk. Peter Marino singled, dented home plate once, stole three bases, picked up an RBI, and walked, and Jose Miguel De Jesus Lebron and Wiljer Casana each registered a single, walk, and RBI.

On the mound for the Panthers, Marino twirled 5.1 innings, taking the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on two hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out five. Jeffrey Roldan and Adonis Suarez combined to pitch the final 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on five hits while walking six, hitting three batters, and whiffing three.

Bronx, now with a CUNYAC championship game appearance solidified, will get right back to work on Tuesday afternoon, as the Broncos will host the Express of Monroe College-Bronx. Start-time at Ohio Field is scheduled for 3:30pm.
