Bronx splits CUNYAC doubleheader with Tigers, controls own destiny for championship game appearance

In a key CUNYAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, the Broncos baseball team split a pair of games with Queensborough, falling to the Tigers 11-1 (five innings) in game one, before bouncing back to win game two by a score of 12-6. With that output, the Broncos are now 7-15 on the 2024 campaign (5-6 CUNYAC), while Queensborough dipped to 6-10 on the season (5-7 CUNYAC).

Bronx controls its own destiny as it pertains to the 2024 CUNYAC title game, as the Broncos can clinch an appearance in the contest with a victory over BMCC on Monday afternoon. Should the Broncos lose, the Tigers would clinch a spot in the championship game. Whoever does qualify will play No. 1 seeded Kingsborough.

April 21, 2024 – Game 1 of DH – Queensborough 11, Bronx 1 (5 Innings)

In game one at Padavan-Preller Field in Bellerose, NY, the highlight of the contest was James Cummins' brilliance on the mound, as the standout hurled a five-inning no-hitter, earning the victory by allowing just one walk while striking out seven.

Queensborough's offense plated 11 runs on 10 hits and four walks. Eight out of nine players in the Tigers lineup registered at least one hit. Wyatt Rodriguez and Jordys Roque tied for the game-high of two hits apiece. Rodriguez recorded two singles, and his three RBI's were a game-high. He also scored a run, walked, and stole a base. Roque doubled, singled, dented home plate once, and drove in a run, as well. In addition, Billy Tavarez singled, scored a run, stole a base, and picked up two RBI's.

Bronx starter Frailin Jimenez struggled, registering just one out in taking the loss, allowing nine runs (all earned) on five hits while issuing three walks and throwing a wild pitch.

April 21, 2024 – Game 2 of DH – Bronx 12, Queensborough 6 (7 Innings)

The Broncos, leading 1-0 after two innings of the second game, plated five runs in the top of the third to take a commanding 6-0 advantage. The Tigers chipped away at that advantage over the course of the next four innings, scoring once in the third, three more times in the fifth, and one more time in the sixth, to inch to within 6-5.

In the top of the seventh inning, Bronx broke the game open, producing six more runs to take a commanding 12-5 advantage. Queensborough was only able to dent home plate once in the bottom of the frame, as the Broncos went on to win the crucial conference clash, 12-6.

Offensively for the Broncos in game two, Yadiel Santos recorded a team-high three hits, registering three singles, stealing a game-high four bases, scoring two runs, driving in two, and drawing a walk. Cristhian Gonzales hit a huge two-run homerun while also hitting a sacrifice fly and drawing a walk. Also, it was Brayan Rubio doubled and singled while scoring two runs.

Steven Santos got the start for the Broncos, tossing three frames and allowing just one run (earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Justin Martinez qualified to earn the victory after hurling just one inning in relief, allowing two runs (earned) on one hit while walking four and striking out two. Yadiel Santos recorded the final nine outs for the visitors, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits while walking four and striking out three.

For the Tigers, Tannenbaum's four hits were a game-high. He doubled, singled three times, scored a pair of runs, stole a base, and drew a walk. Rodriguez reached base three times, earning three walks, registering a single, stealing two bases, and scoring a run, and Tavarez recorded a single, scored two runs, drove in two, and walked.

Edward Abreu Lopez was hammered by the Broncos, as he took the defeat, twirling three frames and allowing six runs (five earned) on three hits while walking five, hitting three batters, and striking out four. Timothy Kiley relieved Lopez and kept Queensborough in the game, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and allowing just two hits while walking three and striking out one. Tannenbaum recorded the final four out for the hosts, allowing six runs (none earned) on three hits while also hitting a batter.

Broncos can clinch CUNYAC title game appearance with a victory Monday

Bronx's potential qualification for the 2024 CUNYAC title game will be determined on Monday afternoon, as the Broncos will play the Panthers of BMCC in a conference contest at Ohio Field. The game will serve as BMCC's home game, and first pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.

If Bronx wins the game, it'll earn the No. 2 seed in the CUNYAC title game, and will face No. 1 seeded Kingsborough for a conference crown on Monday, May 6. Should the Broncos lose today, the No. 2 seed would go to Queensborough.
