Batista's complete game gem, Rodriguez's two-RBI triple the difference as Broncos beat Tigers, 4-3

The Broncos' baseball team picked up another crucial victory on Friday afternoon, rallying from a late 3-1 deficit after being down to their final seven outs to defeat Queensborough Community College by a score of 4-3. The game took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the victory, the Broncos moved into second place in the CUNYAC standings, improving to a mark of 6-14 overall, and 4-5 in conference action. The Tigers dipped to a record of 5-9, and 4-6 in CUNYAC play.

Queensborough scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning off of Broncos starter Wilber Batista. The Tigers pushed across the first run when, with Billy Tavarez aboard first base, Wyatt Rodriguez singled to center. Center fielder Yadiel Santos came up throwing, attempting to nail Tavarez at third base, but the throw was wild, skipping past the dugout area and allowing Tavarez to score. Queensborough's second run in the frame came home on Jordys Roque's RBI groundout to shortstop.

The game stayed 2-0 in favor of Queensborough until the bottom of the sixth when Joel Salcedo and Steven Santos executed a double steal, with Salcedo stealing home. Despite not registering a hit through the first six innings, the Broncos trailed only by a run (2-1).

Queensborough increased its advantage to 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning when Lucas Torrech recorded an RBI single to center field, bringing in Roque.

Entering the bottom of the seventh, Bronx still trailed by two runs (3-1) and was yet to register a hit, until Raul Chevalier laced a two-out single to left. Moises Ortega followed that by drawing a walk, and Juan Rodriguez picked up his biggest hit of the year, drilling a two-run triple to right center field to tie the game at three apiece, as Chevalier and Ortega motored home on the play. Bronx took the lead for good (4-3) the following inning on Cristhian Gonzales' sacrifice fly.

The Tigers were unable to muster any offense in the top of the ninth inning, going down in order, as the Broncos held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory.

Broncos starter Wilber Batista went the distance for Bronx, pitching a complete game and earning the victory, allowing just three runs (two earned) on three hits while issuing one walk, hitting two batters, and striking out 13. Batista improved to 2-2 on the 2024 campaign with his victory, and currently boasts a team-leading ERA of 5.55.

Offensively for Bronx, Rodriguez's triple was the biggest hit of the day, and his two RBI's were a game-high. Yadiel Santos registered a double, and Steven Santos and Raul Chevalier accounted for the Broncos' other two hits on the afternoon, both singles.

Queensborough hurler Thomas Wojnarowski pitched a no-hitter until the seventh innings, allowing just four baserunners and one run through six. He struggled over his final two frames, however, allowing three runs (all earned) on four hits while walking two. For the game, he tossed eight frames, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while walking three. He took the loss to dip to 1-3 on the 2024 season.

The Tigers managed just four hits on the day, all singles. Those aforementioned hits came off the bats of Brandon Caraballo, Rodriguez, Roque, and Torrech.

Bronx and Queensborough will finish this pivotal four-game CUNYAC series tomorrow, as the teams will play a doubleheader at Padavan-Preller Field in Bellerose, NY. Start-times are scheduled for 12:00pm and 3:30pm.
