Broncos record pivotal CUNYAC victory Tuesday afternoon, outlast Tigers 12-10 in slugfest

The Broncos' baseball team picked up a pivotal victory on Tuesday afternoon, rallying from an early 4-0 deficit to outlast the Tigers of Queensborough by a score of 12-10 in CUNYAC action. The contest took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the victory, the Broncos improved to a mark of 5-14 on the season (3-5 CUNYAC), while the Tigers dipped to 5-8 (4-5 CUNYAC).

Queensborough plated four runs in the top of the first inning against Bronx starter Frailin Jimenez. Billy Tavarez's RBI single brought home the first run, and later in the inning Jordys Roque's two-RBI single chased in two more. The Tigers capped their scoring in the first when Leonel Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly.

The score stayed 4-0 in favor of the visitors until the bottom of the second, when the Broncos' offense kicked into gear. With one out, Cristhian Gonzales doubled, and Jimenez singled. After Jimenez stole second to put runners on second and third with one out, Moises Ortega reached via an error, as both Broncos baserunners came around to score to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Ortega later scored via an RBI single by Juan Rodriguez.

Later, in the bottom of the third inning, Yadiel Santos singled, stole second, and advanced to third base on a balk. Justin Martinez then brought Santos home by hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, tying the CUNYAC clash at four apiece. In the following inning (the bottom of the fourth), Bronx took the lead on an RBI single by Joel Salcedo, scoring Ortega, to make it 5-4 Broncos.

The score remained 5-4 in favor of the hosts until the bottom of the seventh, when Bronx dented home plate six times to take a commanding 11-4 advantage. The Broncos recorded five hits in the inning, including four consecutive run-producing hits. With one run already in, Gonzales registered an RBI double to make it 7-4. Jimenez reached on an infield single to short to bring home another run, making it 8-4, and then Ortega reached on an infield hit to push across another run, increasing Bronx's edge to 9-4. Rodriguez then capped the Broncos' big inning with a two-RBI single, making it 11-4 in favor of the Broncos.

Queensborough refused to go down quietly, getting two runners aboard with one out in the eighth, and finally chasing Jimenez from the game. Oscar Rosas then came into the contest and struggled, allowing both inherited runners to score, while also yielding two more runs, as the Tigers inched to within three runs at 11-8. The big hit for Queensborough in the inning came via Hernandez, as he picked up a two-RBI single.

Despite struggling initially, Rosas did wiggle out of trouble. With the bases loaded and the potential go-ahead run at the dish, Rosas got Brandon Caraballo to line into an inning-ending double play, as Lucas Torrech was picked off of second base to end the threat.

After the Broncos added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, Rosas allowed James Cummins to single leading off the ninth, prompting Broncos Head Coach Adolfo DeJesus to bring in Steven Santos in a non-save situation. Santos allowed the inherited runner to score, with Queensborough's 10th run coming around via a Hernandez double. With runners on second and third and one out, Santos locked in, getting Armando Desena to pop out to shortstop, before striking out pinch hitter Isaiah Espinal to end the game.

The Broncos recorded a whopping 16 hits in recording their most important win of the season thus far. Rodriguez came through in the clutch, picking up a team-high three RBI's on a pair of singles. Two Bronx players recorded three hits apiece, including Gonzales who doubled three times, scored a pair of runs, and picked up an RBI, and Ortega, who doubled, singled twice, scored three runs, drove in two, and stole a base.

Jimenez picked up the victory on the hill for Bronx, improving his record to 2-3 on the 2024 campaign. He lasted 7.1 innings and looked dominant for a stretch, at one point retiring 14 out of 15 batters. He allowed six runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out 12. Steven Santos relieved Rosas in the ninth and recorded the final three outs, allowing one run (earned) on two hits while striking out two.

Hernandez was Queensborough's top run producer, as he picked up a game-high four RBI's, registering a double and a single in the process while also scoring a run. Noah Tannenbaum registered three singles while driving in a run, and Tavarez (two singles, two runs scored, one RBI, one free pass) and Wyatt Rodriguez (two singles, three runs scored, one RBI) also had notable games at the dish for the visitors.

James Cummins, who came into the game leading the Tigers in victories on the hill, struggled all game, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 12 hits while walking one and striking out five. He took the loss for Queensborough.
