Broncos unable to overcome powerful Lions lineup as Nassau earns sweep of three-game series

The Bronx Community College baseball team endured a tough weekend, dropping three consecutive games to the Lions of Nassau Community College by scores of 20-1 and 15-0 this past Saturday, and by a final of 17-3 yesterday. All three contests took place at the Lions' home venue, Mitchell Field, in Garden City, NY. With the three defeats, Bronx is now 4-14 on the 2024 campaign, while Nassau improved to 8-9.

April 13, 2024 – Game 1 of DH - Nassau 20, Bronx 1 (5 Innings)

The Lions, serving as the visiting team on its home field for Saturday's doubleheader, wasted no time breaking game one open. Nassau plated four runs in the top of the first, six more in the second, and a whopping nine more in the third to take a 19-0 advantage after three turns at-bat. Bronx's lone run for the contest was produced by Brayan Rubio, as his RBI double in the bottom of the third brought home Joel Salcedo. Nassau won the game 20-1 via the mercy rule after five complete frames.

In addition to Rubio's RBI double, the Broncos registered three more hits on the day, all singles, with Cristhian Gonzales, Salcedo, and Juan Rodriguez registering a single apiece. Bronx also drew five walks on the day, including two by Frailin Jimenez.

Justin Martinez started and struggled for Bronx, lasting just two innings, allowing 10 runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking two and hitting three batters.

The Lions recorded 19 hits in their game one victory, including seven for extra bases. Joseph Lynn and Christopher Picarella were Nassau's primary run producers in the contest, with Lynn recording two triples and a single while scoring three runs and driving in four. Picarella doubled twice, singled twice, scored three runs, and picked up four RBI's. Ryan Johnston doubled, singled, and drove in three, and Marcello Arrigo (three hits), Zaim Deljanin (two hits), and John Dinkelman (two hits) all registered multiple hits on the afternoon.

In addition to his impressive game at the plate, Deljanin also pitched well, picking up the victory by hurling five innings and allowing just one run (earned) on four hits while walking five batters, hitting one, and striking out seven.

April 13, 2024 – Game 2 of DH - Nassau 15, Bronx 0 (5 Innings)

After plating 20 runs in the opener, the Lions continued to produce impressive offensive numbers, denting home plate 15 more times in the second game of the doubleheader. After neither team was able to score in the first inning, Nassau put up nine runs in the top of the second, eventually riding that big inning to a 15-run, five-inning victory.

The Broncos' only two baserunners for the game came via a single by Rubio, and when Euniel De La Rosa was hit by a pitch.
Kyler Almanzar got the start for the Broncos and took the loss, tossing four innings and allowing 15 runs (all earned) on 13 hits while walking two, hitting five batters, and throwing a wild pitch. One bright spot for Bronx was Euniel De La Rosa's performance in relief, as he tossed a scoreless frame, allowing just one hit.

The Lions slashed 14 hits in the second game of the afternoon, including three for extra bases. Sean Richards picked up a game-high four RBI's for Nassau, registering three singles. He also scored a run and stole a base, as well. Johnston drove in two runs by hitting two triples. He also scored three runs. Manuel Barboda singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in two, and Julian Del Castillo picked up a game-high four hits (all singles) while driving in one.

James Reilly pitched a complete game shutout in picking up the win for Nassau, allowing just one single and hitting a batter. He also struck out four, and faced just 17 batters in five innings.

April 14, 2024 – Nassau 17, Bronx 3 (7 Innings)

In the finale of three game series on Sunday afternoon, with the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the second, the Lions put up their third nine-run inning of the series, and in the process, Nassau took a commanding 10-1 advantage over the visiting Broncos. The Lions tacked on three more in the bottom of the third to go up 13-1, and the hosts eventually won the game by 14 after the mercy rule was induced following Bronx's seventh turn at-bat.

The Broncos picked up two hits and drew five walks in the game, with Rubio reaching base three times. The standout, who currently leads the Broncos with a .327 batting average on the season, doubled and walked twice. Martinez picked up a single, and Salcedo, Steven Santos, and Moises Ortega scored one run apiece.

Just as it did for most of the three-game series, the Broncos' pitching struggled on Sunday. Salcedo got the start and lasted just two innings, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on six hits while hitting four batters, walking two, and striking out one. Steven Santos and Rubio didn't fare much better, combining to hurl four frames, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits while walking two and striking out two.

Nassau recorded 16 hits in Sunday's victory, including five for extra bases. Picarella registered a game-high four RBI's, as he doubled, singled twice, walked, and scored a run. Lynn fell a homerun short of hitting for the cycle, as he hit a triple, double, and a single, while also scoring four runs, driving in three, and earning a walk. Christopher Carillo was the other Nassau player to record three hits on the afternoon, as he doubled, singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one.

Tommy Gorham twirled five innings for the hosts, picking up the victory, as he allowed two runs (both earned) on two hits while walking three, hitting two batters, and striking out five. Daniel Ratkewitch hurled two brilliant frames in relief, allowing one run (unearned) and no hits while walking two, hitting a batter, and striking out two.
