Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos, despite totaling 28 runs for the series, suffer four-game sweep to CUNYAC foe Kingsborough

The Broncos' baseball team endured a challenging week in opening up CUNYAC action, as Bronx suffered a four-game sweep to the Wave of Kingsborough Community College. In road contests, the Broncos fell to the Wave 12-7 (March 26) and 13-1 (March 29), before suffering 15-5 and 20-15 setbacks yesterday at Ohio Field. With the defeats, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 2-8 on the 2024 campaign (0-4 CUNYAC), while Kingsborough improved to 5-11 (4-0 CUNYAC).

March 26, 2024 - Kingsborough 12, Bronx 7 (8 Innings)

The Broncos trailed 5-0 after two innings and 8-3 after four frames, eventually falling to the Wave by five runs.

Offensively, Bronx was paced by Cristhian Gonzales, who connected on a three-run homerun. Frailin Jimenez and Yadiel Santos also chipped in with two hits apiece. Jimenez singled twice, dented home plate twice, and drove in a run, and Santos doubled, singled, scored a run, and drove in a run. Brayant Taylor had an RBI double for the visitors, and three other Broncos registered a single, including Justin Martinez, Steven Santos, and Moises Ortega.

It was a tough day on the bump for Wilber Batista, as he took the loss, twisting three innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on four hits while walking six and striking out three. He also hit one batter.

Kingsborough's offensive outburst saw the Wave register a total of 14 hits on afternoon, including three apiece by Chris Jace and Thomas Laino. Filippo Venditti's three RBI's were a team-high.

Alvin Paulino got the start for the Wave and put together a mediocre performance, hurling four frames and allowing three runs (all earned) on four hits while issuing four free passes and striking out eight.

March 29, 2024 - Kingsborough 13, Bronx 1 (7 Innings)

Leading 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Wave broke the game open by plating eight runs in the frame to take a 13-0 advantage. Bronx broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh on Brayan Rubio's solo homerun, but that would be all the offense the Broncos were able to muster on the afternoon.

Other than Rubio's longball, Bronx registered just four other hits, all singles, including two by Jimenez, one by Steven Santos, and one by Juan Rodriguez.

Oscar Rosas pitched five hearty innings, allowing just two earned runs, and five runs overall. He yielded five hits, walked just one, and stuck out three. Relievers Kyler Almanzar and Yadiel Santos combined to twist one full inning, allowing eight runs (two earned) on two hits while walking two.

Laino had a big day at the dish for Kingsborough, finishing with two hits, including a homerun and a single, while scoring twice and driving in four. Venditti and Jace each doubled and drove in one, with Venditti also scoring three runs.

Andrew Ardito was brilliant in pitching a complete game, tossing seven innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits while walking one and striking out two.

March 30, 2024 – Game 1 of DH - Kingsborough 15, Bronx 5 (6 Innings)

Trailing 4-1 after an inning and a half, the Broncos rallied. Bronx was down two runs in the bottom of the fourth when the Broncos tied the game via a two-RBI double by Moises Ortega. The hosts then took the lead when Jimenez made a productive out, grounding out to the shortstop to bring home Raul Chevalier and make it 5-4 Bronx.

Kingsborough tied the game at five apiece in the top of the fifth on Ardito's sacrifice fly. An inning later, with the score still tied, the Wave plated a whopping 10 runs to take a 15-5 advantage. Kingsborough scored four straight runs on RBI walks, before Caro launched a long grand slam to right field. Venditti capped the scoring barrage with a two-RBI single to right center. After the Broncos failed to push across at least one run in the bottom of the sixth, the 10-run mercy rule was induced, giving Kingsborough the victory.

Bronx produced just three hits in the opener, with the big one coming via Ortega's two-RBI double. The other hits came courtesy of Justin Martinez (triple) and Taylor (single). The Broncos drew five walks, including two from Jimenez, who also scored a run and drove in one.

Jimenez took the loss for Bronx on the bump, tossing five innings and change, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits while walking seven batters and striking out four. Rubio struggled mightily in relief, unable to register an out while allowing five earned runs on three walks and a hit batsman.

Kingsborough used 12 walks and eight hits to produce 15 runs. The two big blasts came from McLaughlin, who hit a three-run shot in the top of the second, and Victor Perez, who launched a grand slam homerun to right center in the sixth inning. Venditti also had himself a fine day at the dish, registering two hits, including a double, and driving in three runs.

Venditti had a solid day on the hill for Kingsborough. Despite some struggles, the youngster was able to record the victory, tossing five frames and allowing five runs (four earned) and issuing four walks while scattering three hits and striking out four.

March 30, 2024 – Game 2 of DH - Kingsborough 20, Bronx 15 (7 Innings)

In a wild series finale between the two CUNYAC foes, the teams combined for 35 runs, with the Broncos unfortunately coming out on the wrong side of a 20-15 score. Kingsborough plated the first eight runs of the afternoon in the top of the first, before Bronx stormed back with a run in the bottom of the frame, and five more in the bottom of the second to inch to within two at 8-6.

Later, trailing 13-6 heading into the bottom of the third inning, the Broncos dented home plate twice in the third and six more times in the fourth to take a 14-13 advantage. The Wave then took the lead for good in the top of the fifth, scoring five times to catapult ahead 18-14, before eventually holding on to win by five.

Bronx produced nine hits and nine walks in the game, with Rubio finishing with a double, single, a run scored, a walk, and three runs batted in. Yadiel Santos finished two-for-five with a double, two runs scored, and two runs driven in, and Justin Martinez and Euniel De La Rosa were the other Broncos with multiple hits in the game, with those two aforementioned players each singling twice.

Eight of Kingsborough's 13 hits in game two went for extra bases, with Laino and Ardito each homering twice. Laino also added a pair of singles, two runs scored, and four runs batted in, while Ardito dented home plated three times, walked, and drove in three. McLaughlin, Venditti, and Lewis taliied a triple apiece, with Venditti also doubling, as well.

Kingsborough starter Giovanni Loiacono struggled in his two innings of work on the bump, allowing six runs (five earned) on three hits while walking four, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out for. The next two Wave relievers, Robert Pacifici and Stephen Pearson, combined to record just four outs, allowing seven runs (five earned) on three hits while walking two and hitting three batters. Caro captured the victory in relief, hurling 2.1 frames and allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking two.
