Broncos stage two incredible comebacks over the weekend, stealing home-opening series from Bulldogs

The Bronx Community College baseball team played its first home series of the 2024 campaign this weekend, putting together a pair of tremendous comebacks against Bunker Hill Community College, and capturing two out of three contests from the Bulldogs overall.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Broncos rallied from a 6-0 deficit to defeat Bunker Hill by a score of 13-7. The Bulldogs won the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 11-2. Yesterday, Bronx rallied from an 8-0 deficit to outlast Bunker Hill in a thriller, winning the game 14-12. With that three-game output, the Broncos improved to a mark of 2-3 on the season.

Trailing 6-0 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Broncos used a ferocious rally in the bottom of the third inning to surge back, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs to catapult ahead of the visitors by a score of 7-6. Brayan Rubio was the key contributor in the inning, driving home Bronx's first run with an RBI triple, and capping his team's rally with a two-RBI double to right field that brought home the tying and go-ahead runs. After three innings of play, Bronx led 7-6.

After Bunker Hill tied the game in the top of the fourth inning via an RBI groundout, the Broncos flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring six runs via three base hits to take a commanding 13-7 advantage. The biggest blow in the inning came via Steven Santos' two-RBI double that drove in two runs. After six innings of play, the Broncos led 13-7, and they would go on to win by that same score.

Wilber Batista pitched in relief for the Broncos, earning the victory, as he hurled the final our innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits while walking three and striking out five. Bautista came on in relief of Bronx starter Yadiel Santos who struggled, as he allowed six runs (three earned) on four hits while walking five and whiffing a batter.

Bronx tallied 12 hits in the game. Santos and Rubio were key contributors for the Broncos, with each driving in three runs. Justin Martinez recorded three hits including two doubles and a single, and Juan Rodriguez singled twice and walked in the victory. The Broncos had a strong eye at the plate, tallying eight walks for the contest. Santos and Cristhian Gonzales led the team with two apiece.

Roso led Bunker Hill Community College with two RBI on the afternoon. He picked up three hits, including a double and a pair of singles. Jarrell Banks walked three times, earning three of the Bulldogs' eight free passes for the game. Bunker Hill also tallied five stolen bases, as well.

In game two of the doubleheader, with Bronx leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth, Bunker Hill scored five runs to snatch a commanding 6-2 edge. The key hit in the inning was Roso's single that plated two runs.

Oscar Rosas started on the bump for the Broncos, taking the loss. He tossed 3.2 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out six. His counterpart, Laguna of Bunker Hill, hurled 4.2 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out five.

Frailin Jimenez led the way offensively for the Broncos in game two, singling twice, walking twice, and scoring a run. Yadiel Santos earned Bronx's only RBI of the game, with that coming in the third inning via a sacrifice fly to center.

The Bulldogs collected 11 hits in game two, with Roso accounting for four of those, as he singled four times and drove in five runs. Chirinos and Banks each collected multiple hits on the day. Bunker Hill earned six stolen bases on the day, with Roso and Arias swiping two bags apiece.

In Sunday's nine-inning single game, the Broncos pulled off an incredible comeback, rallying from eight runs down after three innings of play to win the game. The Broncos plated a whopping 14 runs over their final five turns at-bat, with the first of those runs coming via a long homerun to right center by Johan De La Cruz. Jimenez was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, driving in the Broncos' second run, and a Bunker Hill error with two outs brought home two more Bronx runs, as the hosts pulled to within 8-4 after four innings of action.

Later, with Bronx trailing 12-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning, a Martinez sacrifice fly brought home Moises Ortega to pull the Broncos within five (12-7). The Broncos would go on to plate three more runs in the frame, with Gonzales picking up an RBI single, Steven Santos slashing an RBI double, and Rubio following that with an RBI double of his town. As the book closed on the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos were down only two runs, 12-10.

The Broncos completed their wild comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning. Trailing 12-11 with the bases loaded and two out, Jimenez drew a walk to drive in the tying run. Ortega followed that by getting drilled with a pitch to force in the go-ahead run, and an RBI walk to Martinez capped the Broncos' scoring for the inning. Bronx led 14-12 after eight frames.

Jimenez took the bump in the ninth inning with an opportunity to earn the save, and he did just that, retiring the side in order to earn the Broncos the thrilling triumph.

Bronx registered 10 hits and drew eight walks in the game. Steven Santos finished the contest with three hits, including a double and a pair of singles. He also walked twice. Rubio doubled and singled, and Yadiel Santos was the other Broncos player to earn multiple hits, as he tripled and singled.

Bunker Hill's offense in game two was led by Banks, Chirinos, and Arias, with each of those aforementioned players picking up multiple hits on the day. Banks has two singles while driving in a team-high three runs.

Broncos starter Eilan Corporan struggled starting the game for his team, as he lasted just 2.2 innings, yielding five runs (four earned) on four hits while walking six and striking out two. Rubio earned the victory in relief for the hosts, as he tossed one inning, allowing two hits and issuing a walk before escaping trouble by getting the Bulldogs to knock into a double play. Jimenez earned the save for the Broncos with a perfect ninth.
