Inefficient shooting costs Broncos in 51-45 loss to Dutchess Falcons

The Broncos' women's basketball team suffered a tough defeat this past Tuesday evening, falling to the Falcons of Dutchess Community College by a score of 51-45. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 2-4 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while Dutchess improved to a record of 2-5.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Yahannis Martinez posted a double-double, scoring 15 points to go along with 13 rebounds (eight offensive boards), six steals, two assists, and a pair of blocks. Angelina Gonzalez also registered a double-double, netting 12 points while collecting 10 boards and recording five steals, and Ana Matos finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

The Broncos couldn't get much going offensively in the first half, as the hosts trailed 13-3 after 10 minutes of action, and 25-9 at the half. Bronx staged a second half comeback, outscoring the visitors by a score of 17-9 in the third to pull to within eight, 34-26, after three quarters. The Broncos pulled to within five in the final period, but ultimately fell short, falling 51-45.

For the evening, Bronx hit on just 18 of 70 shot attempts (25.7 percent), including just two out of 28 from long range (7.1 percent). The Broncos also struggled from the free throw line, misfiring on 15 attempts (7-22, 31.8 percent). Bronx collected 58 boards for the night, tallied 22 steals, and committed 27 miscues.

The Broncos will return to action on Thursday evening, as Bronx will travel to the Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium in Throggs Neck, NY to battle Monroe University-Bronx. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
