Gritty Broncos rally late, overcome nine point deficit to defeat Sharks, 55-50

The Broncos' women's basketball team picked up a tremendous victory on Tuesday evening, rallying back from nine points down at the beginning of the fourth quarter to defeat the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College by a score of 55-50. The game took place in Selden, NY. With the triumph, Bronx is now 2-3 on the 2024-2025 season, while the hosts slipped to 2-2 after their second straight defeat.

Ana Matos paced the Broncos in her return following a one-game absence, as she scored a game-high 16 points (8-11 FT) to go along with seven rebounds, four steals, and a pair of assists. Taylar Hill contributed 15 points, a pair of boards, and two assists, and Angelina Gonzalez registered 10 points while pulling down eight boards and swiping four steals. Finally, it was Yahannis Martinez netting nine points, collecting five rebounds, and adding four steals.

Despite the loss for the Sharks, Nathalia Minchala scored a team-high 11 points, connecting on five of her nine attempts from the floor. Amaya Daniels added 10 points, three boards, and a pair of assists, and Alyssa Dixon finalized her evening with nine points, four steals, and a pair of swatted shots.

Bronx trailed 9-7 after a quarter, 25-19 at the half, and 41-32 after 30 minutes of action. The Broncos flipped a switch in the final period, scoring 23 points while holding Suffolk to just nine, catapulting past the Sharks and earning an impressive, gritty five-point win (55-50).

The Broncos won the game despite shooting just 29 percent from the floor (20-69), though the Sharks were also inefficient from the floor, earning just a 32.8 percent conversion rate (20-61). Suffolk held a 38-32 edge on the glass, while also earning 13 assists compared to eight for the visitors. Bronx's prowess on defense was on full display, as the Broncos swiped 18 steals on the night, while the hosts had 11. Bronx also held a 3-2 edge in blocked shots.

Bronx will now have six days off before returning to action on Tuesday evening, as the Broncos will welcome Dutchess to the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
