Women's volleyball edged by Caimans in five-set thriller in CUNYAC home finale

The Broncos' women's volleyball team put forth a hearty effort in its home finale this evening, but ultimately fell to CUNYAC borough foe Hostos Community College by scores of 25-14, 19-25, 25-9, 20-25, and 11-15. The match took place at the Alumni Gymnasium on the campus of Bronx Community College. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 1-14 on the 2024 campaign (0-5 CUNYAC), while the Caimans improved to 2-11 (2-2 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss, Pamela Sierra put forth another incredible outing, registering a match-high 15 kills while swatting .220 (15-6-41). Her 22 digs were also a match-best, and she added six service aces, as well. Additionally, Naomi Rodriguez's 14 assists were a team-high, and she also contributed eight digs and six service aces. Valerie De Los Santos' seven service aces led all players, and she also contributed four digs.

Pacing Hostos was Natalie Mora, as she registered a team-best 12 kills while swatting .135 (12-7-37). Her six service aces also tied for the match-high, and she also added five digs. Former Bronx Broncos women's basketball player Nyla Harris registered nine kills and a pair of digs, and Samantha Colon finalized her evening with five kills. Alyson Camejo's 21 assists led all players, and Mariali Sosa added a team-best 14 digs.

The Broncos dominated the opening set. Leading 5-4, Bronx scored eight straight points, highlighted by Pamela Sierra's three service aces and a kill, to take a commanding 13-5 edge. Later, leading the set 14-8, the Broncos went on another run, notching seven consecutive points to snatch a 21-8 advantage. That aforementioned run featured a service ace by Rodriguez, and six attack/setting errors by the Caimans. Further into the set, leading 24-14, a Pamela Sierra kill clinched things for the Broncos, giving them a 1-0 edge for the match.

In the second set, the Broncos trailed 23-13 before making a late run. Following a Marbely Tavarez service error, Andrea Ramos registered a service ace. Mora would then commit an attack error, and that would be followed by two more service aces by Ramos, and another attack error by Mora. At that juncture of the set, Hostos was clinging to a 23-19 edge. The Caimans finished strong, though, notching two straight points, with the set-winner coming via a Mora service ace.

The Broncos led 13-8 in the third set before running off 12 of the final 13 points to win it, 25-9. During that 12-1 run, Rodriguez notched three service aces, Yamelis Santana earned two, and Shanice Walters added a kill.

Bronx trailed 6-2 in the fourth, before scoring four consecutive points to tie the set, 6-6. A Sierra kill, and two service aces by De Los Santos highlighted that
aforementioned run. The Broncos later held leads of 13-11 and 15-14, but an 8-5 spurt put Hostos in prime position to tie the match in sets, as the Caimans led 22-20. Hostos would then register the final three points of the set, via a service error by Santana, a service ace by Alyson Camejo, and a kill by Harris.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Broncos put themselves in a big hole, falling behind by a score of 7-0 as Camejo earned two more service aces, and Mora and Harris added a kill apiece. Bronx would then go on a 9-3 run to pull to within a point at 10-9. De Los Santos earned two service aces during that run, with Pamela Sierra sprinkling in a pair of kills. The Caimans later led 13-11 before two Bronx errors (one service error and one attack error) clinched the match for Hostos.

For the evening, the Caimans swatted .029 (29-26-104), while the Broncos hit a cut below (.024, 22-20-85). Bronx held a commanding 30-19 edge in service aces, while also registering 48 digs to Hostos' 39. The Caimans did hold a 25-19 edge in assists.

The Broncos will return to action on Thursday evening, as Bronx will travel to Bayside, NY to battle the Tigers of Queensborough Community College. Start-time at the Robert F. Kennedy Gymnasium is scheduled for 6:00pm.
