Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos drop doubleheader to Nassau Lions 11-1 and 12-11 Saturday in Garden City, NY

The Broncos baseball team wrapped-up a four game set with the Lions of Nassau Community College on Saturday afternoon, dropping two games in Garden City, NY by scores of 11-1 and 12-11. With the defeats, Bronx slipped to a mark of 2-12 on the 2023 campaign, while the host Lions reached the .500 mark, now owning an 8-8 record.

Similar to the two games played earlier in the week at Ohio Field, Nassau was completely dominant in Saturday's opener. The Lions plated four runs in the top of the first, and later led 6-1 after four innings. Nassau would then put a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the fifth to induce the mercy rule, as the Lions went up 11-1, ending the game.

The Broncos registered five hits in the opener. Angel Calderon picked up a double, and Wilkin Ruan, Steven Correa, Samuel De La Rosa, and Yoskar Almonte all picked up singles. Almonte registered Bronx's only RBI for the contest.

On the hill, Bronx's Jefferson Santiago took the loss, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits while issuing three walks and striking out four.

In the second game of the day, the Broncos showed tremendous resiliency. Bronx trailed 12-1 after four innings of play, but nearly completed an improbable comeback, plating seven runs in the fifth, and three more in the sixth to slice its deficit to one at 12-11. Despite nearly relinquishing that huge lead, Nassau held on to win the game by that aforementioned 12-11 score.

Offensively for the Broncos in game two, Wilkin Ruan tripled, walked, scored three runs and picked up three RBI's. Raul Chevalier singled twice, walked, dented home plate once, and drove in two. Francisco Leonardo singled, scored once, and drove in two, and Albel Ruan and Luis Roman Sanchez each singled and drove in one. Roman Sanchez scored twice, with Albel Ruan scoring once.

Broncos starter Christopher Messon picked up a loss, tossing three innings and allowing nine runs (six earned) on three hits while walking seven and striking out two. Reliever Samuel De La Rosa hurled three innings, allowing three earned runs while walking three, hitting two, and striking out three.

Bronx will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Queensborough in a CUNYAC game. The game will take place at Kingsborough, and start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
