Bronx blows out Queensborough, gets overwhelmed by Brookdale in recent contests

The Broncos baseball team split a pair of games in recent days, defeating CUNYAC foe Queensborough Community College by a score of 18-3 on Tuesday afternoon, before falling yesterday to Brookdale Community College by a final of 18-5. With that 1-1 output, Bronx is now 3-13 on the 2023 campaign (3-4 CUNYAC). The Tigers fell to 2-7 overall (2-7 CUNYAC), and the Bulldogs improved their mark to 24-7.

Tuesday's CUNYAC game between Bronx and Queensborough was played at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. After a scoreless first inning, the Broncos plated eight runs in the top of the second, and never looked back. Bronx led 11-0 after three turns at-bat, and would go on to demolish the Tigers by 15 runs.

Offensively for Bronx, five players registered multi-hit afternoons, including standout Steven Correa, as he led all players with three, including a double, a pair of singles, a walk, two runs scored, and two runs driven in. Francisco Leonardo doubled and singled, while also walking twice, denting home plate five times, and picking up an RBI. Samuel De La Rosa homered, singled, scored twice, and drove in four. Albel Ruan hit a homerun, walked, scored twice, and drove in two. Finally, Wilkin Ruan and Julio Liz picked up two hits apiece, with Ruan singling twice and scoring twice, and Liz doubling, singling, scoring a run, and driving in one.

In an offensive clinic, the Broncos recorded 15 hits, including six for extra bases, while walking 10 times and reaching four times via HBP's. Bronx also stole five bases, as well.

On the hill for the Broncos, Jordy Garcia pitched brilliantly, tossing a complete game (seven innings) and allowing just three runs (two earned) on four hits while not issuing a walk and striking out seven.

In Wednesday, loss at Brookdale, Bronx sliced a 7-0 deficit to 7-5 by denting home plate five times in the top of the sixth, but the Bulldogs responded with a monstrous 11-run sixth to essentially put the game to bed.

Wilkin Ruan (a triple) and Samuel De La Rosa (double) recorded the only extra base hits on the afternoon for the Broncos. Euniel De La Rosa, Correa, and Leonardo accounted for the other three hits, with each notching a single.

Bronx hurlers struggled in this game. Christopher Messon started and lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) while giving up five hits and walking two. Three Broncos relievers, including Alexander Lora, Albel Ruan, and Euniel De La Rosa, combined to toss 3.2 innings, allowing 11 earned runs on nine hits while walking nine and striking out five.

The Broncos will return to action on Friday afternoon, as Bronx will face Queensborough for the second time in a four-day span. The CUNYAC clash will once again take place at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
