Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos fall to Nassau twice at Ohio Field, 7-2 (Tuesday) and 15-2 (Friday)

The Broncos baseball team suffered a pair of losses this week, falling to the Lions of Nassau Community College by scores of 7-2 (Tuesday) and 15-2 (Friday) at Ohio Field on the campus of Bronx Community College. With the defeats, Bronx dipped a mark of 2-10 on the 2023 campaign, while the Lions improved to 6-8 on the year.

In Tuesday's game, the Broncos' offensive was held scoreless through the first seven innings, before plating a run apiece in the eighth and ninth innings. Luis Roman Sanchez was the only Bronx player to reach base twice, as he tripled and drew a walk, while also scoring a run. Samuel De La Rose also tripled and picked up an RBI, and Alex Messon registered a double. The other two hits, both singles, were picked up by Euniel De La Rosa and Raul Chevalier.

For the Lions, their potent offense racked-up 12 hits on the afternoon, including five for extra bases. Thomas Kelly homered and doubled, denting home place once while also driving in three. Braden Clark doubled twice and recorded one RBI, and Tyler Schubert and Adrian Depena each picked up a pair of singles. Schubert scored twice and earned an RBI, while Dependa registered one RBI.

Broncos starting pitcher Jordy Garcia struggled in taking the loss, as he hurled 8.1 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits while walking two, hitting a batter, and whiffing six.

Nassau starter Dominic Tuozzo tossed six scoreless innings in picking up the victory, scattering two hits and walking a pair while striking out seven. James Reilly recorded the final nine outs, allowing two earned runs on three hits while issuing two free passes and striking out four.

In Friday's contest, the Lions jumped all over the Broncos starter Alex Messon early, plating eight runs in the top of the first innings, thanks to an RBI single by Kelly, a bases-loaded walk issued to Julio Lazardo, a grand slam by Jorge Espinal, and a two-run single by Schubert.

Nassau would go on to plate two more runs against Messon before his exit, taking an 10-0 advantage in the top of the third. Bronx pitcher Alexander Lora relieved Messon, but he would allow a two-run homer to Espinal, as the Lions snatched a 12-0 advantage. Nassau tacked on another run in the fourth to increase its edge to 13-0.

Bronx finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth, plating a pair of runs on Chevalier's double to right-center. Those would be the only runs of the afternoon for the Broncos, who went on to drop the contest, 15-2.

The Lions out-hit the Broncos 12-4 in the game, though Espinal's two homeruns were the only extra base hits of the afternoon. The other 10 hits were all singles, with Schubert notching two, and eight other players logging one.

For Bronx, Messon took the loss, twisting just two innings and allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on eight hits while walking four, hitting a pair of batters, and striking out four. His counterpart, Brian Chin, hurled a complete game, tossing seven innings and allowing just two earned runs on four hits while walking three, hitting two, and striking out 14.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as they'll travel to Garden City, NY to finish this string of four games against Nassau. Start-time for game one of the doubleheader is set for 12:00pm, with the second game slated for 3:00pm.
