Game Recap: Baseball |

Despite hearty efforts, Broncos drop two contests to Express at Ohio Field, 9-6 and 5-3

The Broncos' baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Ohio Field, falling to the Express of Monroe-Bronx by scores of 9-8 (eight innings) and 5-3 (six innings). The Broncos, despite valiant efforts in both contests, came up short, falling to 6-19 on the year. The Express improved to 20-16 with the two victories.

In game one of the afternoon, with the contest tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Wilkin Ruan's RBI single pushed the Broncos ahead 4-3. Bronx would plate two additional runs in the bottom of the sixth when Steven Correa reached on an error via the left fielder, scoring Wilkin Ruan, to make it 5-3, and an RBI single by Samuel De La Rosa, to put Bronx ahead 6-3.

Broncos starter Jordy Garcia, who had pitche six innings of brilliant ball leading up to the ninth, allowed three runs in the seventh, as Monroe-Bronx tied the game at six apiece. The Express was down 6-4, and was down to its final out, before registering three straight hits - a single by Ian Faulkner, and back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Jose Zabala Rodriguez and Hexciel Perez. The Broncos failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, and the game headed to extra innings.

In the top of the seventh, the Express plated three runs off of a tired Garcia, to take a 9-6 edge. The Broncos refused to quit, though, plating two runs thanks to an RBI fielder's choice by Angel Calderon, and an RBI single by Albel Ruan. With the score 9-8 in favor of the Express, and with runners on first and second and two outs, Luis Roman Sanchez grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

Alex Bello-Rodriguez started for Monroe-Bronx, and he received a no-decision, tossing three innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking a batter, hitting one, and striking out three. Luis Lopez picked up the victory in relief, twisting two innings and allowing two earned runs, not allowing a hit, walking four, and striking out four. Tyler Cadena earned a two-out save, allowing no runs and one hit in the process.

Garcia hurled all eight innings for the Broncos in taking the loss, allowing nine runs (six over the final two innings) on 15 hits while issuing four walks and striking out two.

Monroe-Bronx recorded six extra base hits on the day. Ernie Farrell picked up a triple and a pair of singles, while also scoring two runs and driving in one. Zabala doubled twice and earned two RBI's, and Diaz doubled, singled, dented home plate twice, and drove in a run.

The Broncos earned eight hits during game one, highlighted by Wilkin Ruan's two singles, four stolen bases, and two walks, and Francisco Leonardo's two singles, a walk, and an RBI. Correa singled, walked twice, drove in a run, and stole three bases, and Jarlyn Suarez notched the only extra base hit of the game for Bronx, a double.

Things looked promising for the Broncos in game two after three innings, as Bronx held a 1-0 edge following an RBI double by De La Rosa. Monroe-Bronx responded with four runs in the top of the fourth, though, courtesy of a two-RBI single by Perez, and a two-RBI single by Zabala. After three andd a half, Monroe-Bronx led 4-1.

Just as they had done all series against the Express, the Broncos refused to go quietly. Bronx scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a two-RBI single by Correa.
Unfortunately for the Broncos, that would be the final run that they would score on the day, as Monroe-Bronx added an insurance run in the top of the fifth, and would eventually complete the sweep, winning game two, 5-3.

Express starter David Pena received a no-decision in this one, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits, five walks, and two hit-batsman. He also struck out two batters, as well. Miguel Polanco picked up the victory in relief, as he was masterful, pitching 2.1 frames and not allowing a run while striking out four.

For the Broncos, Jefferson Santiago took the loss, hurling four innings and allowing five earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out two.

Ramsel Jerez was the only player on either side to register multiple hits in game two, as he singled twice and scored a run. As mentioned earlier, Perez and Zabala had the key hits in the game, with both registering two-RBI singles.

For the Broncos, Correa, De La Rosa, Raul Chevalier, and Suarez each notched a single. Correa had two RBI's on the day, with De La Rosa adding the other.

Bronx will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Selden, NY to take on Suffolk County Community College in a single game. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
