Broncos show grit despite suffering pair of losses to Express at Roberto Clemente State Park

The Broncos baseball team dropped a pair of high-scoring road games this week, falling to Monroe College-Bronx at Roberto Clemente State Park by scores of 10-8 this past Tuesday, and 11-7 earlier today. With that output, the Broncos fell to 6-17 on the 2023 campaign, while the Express is now 18-16 on the year.

In Tuesday's contest, the Express built a commanding six-run lead in the sixth inning before holding off Bronx's charge for a 10-8 victory in nine innings. The Broncos plated four runs in the failed comeback on a single by Steven Correa in the seventh, and doubles by Albel Ruan and Correa in the ninth.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the second, Imanol Ramos drew a walk with the bases loaded to give the Express a 1-0 edge. Monroe-Bronx plated another run In the third, as Randy Diaz scored after Ian Faulkner reached on an error. Bronx evened things up at two in the top of the fourth, when Ruan's clutch single scored a pair of runs.

The Express took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth inning. In that frame, Camilo Rodriguez singled, scoring one run, and Ramos doubled, scoring two more. The Express continued to excel offensively, scoring three more runs in the sixth. Ernie Farrell, Faulkner, and Jabez King all drove in runs in the frame.

Bronx, trailing 10-5 in the ninth, scored three runs in an effort to shrink the deficit and take the lead when Ruan and Correa each drove in runs during the inning. Leonardo Francisco represented the potential tying run, as he was up with a runner on first and two men out, but he struck out swinging to end the contest.

Adrian Quezada earned the victory on the hill for Monroe, allowing six hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out nine and not issuing a free pass. Frank Ballar and Tyler Cadena entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Cadena registered the final two outs to earn a save.

Alex Messon took the loss for the Broncos, as he allowed eight runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out four.

For the game, Monroe-Bronx picked up 10 hits. Diaz, Faulkner, Ramos, Farrell, and Rodriguez each collected two hits to lead the Express.

In Friday's game, the Express plated 11 runs in the opening three innings, going up 11-0. Ernie Farrell's RBI double in the first inning got Monroe's scoring started. Camilo Rodriguez later had a two-RBI single, and the scoring was capped by Hecxiel Perez's two-run double. After one, it was 5-0 Express.

Despite the large deficit, the Broncos didn't quit. Bronx scored a run in the fourth when Samuel De La Rosa reached on a throwing error, as Luis Roman Sanchez came on to score to make it 11-5.
