Broncos record doubleheader sweep of BMCC, clinch spot in 2023 CUNYAC title game

The Broncos baseball team picked up a pair of victories yesterday against CUNYAC foe Borough of Manhattan Community College, defeating the Panthers by scores of 7-4 and 29-13 in conference action. With the victories, Bronx improved to 6-15 on the season (6-6), clinching a spot in May 8th's CUNYAC championship game against Kingsborough. With the pair of losses, the Panthers dipped to 2-16 (2-10 CUNYAC).

Though the games took place at Ohio Field, BMCC served as the home institution. In game one of the doubleheader, the Broncos took an early lead in the top of the first when Leonardo Francisco registered an RBI single. Raul Chevalier extended Bronx's advantage to three runs when he poked a two-RBI single to center field in the top of the third.

Later in the game, in the bottom of the sixth, with the Broncos leading 5-1, BMCC sliced its deficit in half when Abdel Raheem Dolah notched a two-RBI single to make it 5-3 in favor of Bronx. The Broncos were able to get those two runs back in the top of the seventh inning when Angel Calderon reached on an error, bringing home a run, and Chevalier singled in Bronx's seventh run.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers' Christian Hill singled home a run with two outs. The following batter, Frank Reyes, popped out to shortstop to end the contest.

Offensively for the Broncos, Chevalier was the star of the game, picking up three hits, all singles, while scoring a run and driving home three. Five other Broncos picked up a single apiece, including Steven Correa, Leonardo, Albel Ruan, Alex Messon, and Yoskar Almonte. Leonardo, Albel Ruan, and Calderon all notched RBI's.

Reyes and Raheem each picked up a pair of singles for the Panthers despite the loss. Raheem scored a run and picked up two RBI's. Gerardo Galan Berihuete and Hill also picked up an RBI apiece.

On the hill, Jordy Garcia was brilliant for Bronx, hurling a complete game (seven innings) and picking up a victory, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while not walking a batter and striking out seven.

For BMCC, Nicholas Mattera pitched 6.2 innings and took the loss, allowing seven runs (just three earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out nine.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Broncos rallied back from a 13-8 sixth inning deficit and scoring 21 runs in the top of the sixth to catapult ahead by a score of 29-13. After the Panthers didn't score in the bottom of the sixth, the game ended via the mercy rule.

Offensively for Bronx, the Broncos picked up 20 hits in the game two victory, including eight for extra bases. Correa lead the way with five hits, including a triple, double, three singles, four runs scored, a stolen base, and five RBI's.  Roman Sanchez tripled, singled, was hit by a pitch, walked, scored three times, and drove home six, and five other Broncos picked up two hits apiece as the Broncos powered their way to a win.

For the Panthers, Reyes, Mattera, and Raheem each notched three hits, with Reyes and Mattera each picking up triples. Those three aforementioned players accounted for eight of BMCC's 11 RBI's on the day.

Broncos starter Samuel De La Rosa struggled on the hill, tossing three innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits while walking four and striking out two. Albel Ruan and Euniel De La Rosa weren't better in relief, combining to toss two innings and allowing six runs. De La Rosa still picked up the victory, however.

The Broncos will look to make it three victories in a row on Tuesday, as they'll travel to Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx to battle Monroe College (Bronx). Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
