Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos drop two out of three games to Tigers in CUNYAC action this weekend

The Broncos' baseball team dropped two out of three games to CUNYAC rival Queensborough Community College this weekend, defeating the Tigers on the road by a score of 23-20 Friday afternoon, before losing a pair of games to Queensborough at Ohio Field yesterday (8-3 and 5-1). With that output, Bronx is now 4-15 on the 2023 campaign (4-6 CUNYAC), while the Tigers improved to 4-8 overall (4-8 CUNYAC).

This past Friday, in a game that had the offensive prowess of a football contest, the Broncos rallied back from deficits of 7-1 and 10-5 to win the game. Bronx, trailing by that aforementioned 10-5 score after four innings of play, dented home plate 13 times in the top of the fifth to snatch a commanding 18-10 advantage.

Later in the game, Bronx held a 23-12 edge heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Queensborough refused to give up. The Tigers plated four in the bottom of the frame, one more in the seventh, and three more in the ninth, before ultimately falling short. The Broncos were able to weather the storm, holding off their CUNYAC rivals to register a wild three-run victory.

Offensively for Bronx in the win, the Broncos registered 20 hits, including six for extra bases. Wilkin Ruan went four for six on the afternoon, tripling, singling three times, driving in five runs, scoring twice, and stealing a base. Three other Broncos recorded three hits apiece, including Albel Ruan (triple, two singles), Angel Calderon (double, two singles), and Samuel De La Rosa (three singles). Albel Ruan and Calderon each scored three runs, with Calderon also driving in three. Also, Luis Roman Sanchez had himself a terrific day at the plate, hitting a triple and a double while scoring four times and picking up four RBI's.

The Tigers picked up 18 hits during the wild contest, including eight for extra bases, all doubles. Leonardo Alvarez had himself a tremendous day at the dish, going six for seven with three doubles, three singles, five runs scored, five RBI's, and a stolen base. Noah Tannenbaum and James Cummins were the only other Queensborough players with at least three hits. Tannenbaum doubled twice, singled, scored six runs, drove in one, walked, and stole a base, and Cummins doubled, singled twice, scored three runs, walked twice, and drove in a run.

On the hill for the Broncos, after starter Santiago was chased early (1.1 innings pitched, six earned runs), Samuel De La Rosa entered the contest, and despite allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and six walks while striking out five, he still earned the victory in relief.
Queensborough starter Miguel Baez took the loss for the Tigers, hurling four innings and allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on seven hits while walking five, hitting three batters, and striking out three.

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, after neither team was able to score in the opening two innings, Queensborough opened things up with a seven spot in the top of the third inning and never looked back, going on to defeat the Broncos 8-3.

Despite the defeat, Roman Sanchez and Raul Chevalier each registered two singles apiece. Roman Sanchez also scored a run while driving in two. Jarlyn Suarez (a double), Steven Correa, and Albel Ruan accounted for the other three Broncos hits, with each of the aforementioned men recording singles.

Christopher Messon took the loss on the hill for Bronx, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing six runs (all earned) on six walks while striking out four. Relievers Euniel De La Rosa and Roman Sanchez were bright spots, however. De La Rosa allowed just one earned runs over three innings, while Roman Sanchez hurled 1.1 innings of perfect ball, striking out three.

In the second game of yesterday's doubleheader, with the game tied 1-1 after two innings of play, the Tigers played a run in each of the third and fourth frames, before adding two insurance runs in the sixth, to account for the 5-1 final score.

The Broncos picked up just three hits in the game, with Wilkin Ruan, Albel Ruan, and Alex Messon all notching a single apiece.

Starter Jefferson Santiago took the loss, twisting five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out three. Roman Sanchez pitched well in relief, logging two innings and yielding three hits while striking out two and not allowing a run.

The Broncos will return to action tomorrow afternoon, as they'll take on BMCC in a CUNYAC doubleheader at Ohio Field. Start-time for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00pm, with the second contest slated for 3:00pm.
