Game Recap: Baseball |

Bronx splits four conference contests, dropping pair to Kingsborough, before trouncing BMCC twice

The Broncos' baseball team split a pair of CUNYAC games recently, dropping two mercy-rule shortened five inning games at Kingsborough this past Sunday, before turning around and defeating BMCC at Ohio Field on Thursday (22-3) and Friday (12-7), respectively. With that output, Bronx is now 2-8 on the 2023 campaign (2-4 CUNYAC).

In Bronx's loss to the Wave in game one this past Sunday, Albel Ruan and Leonardo Francisco registered two hits apiece. Ruan doubled, singled, and scored a run, while Francisco recorded a pair of singles while stealing a base. Wilkin Ruan also tripled, walked, and dented home plate once.

Jefferson Santiago took the loss on the hill, hurling 4.1 innings and allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on 15 hits while issuing five walks, hitting a batter, and striking out three.

Offensively for Kingsborough, slugger Christopher Jace hit for the cycle, scoring three runs and driving in a pair in the process. Four other Wave players registered two singles apiece, including Bryan Lopez Duran, Nicholas Piazza, Jonathan Fonseca, and Anthony Parker. Three of the aforementioned players, except for Parker, scored two runs, but Parker did drive in a pair.

Fonseca, who received a victory in relief at Ohio Field back on Friday, March 24, picked up a five inning win as a starter in this contest, twirling five frames and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking a pair and striking out seven.

The Broncos only mustered two singles in the game two defeat, courtesy of Francisco and Julio Liz. Francisco and Wilkin Ruan each registered a stolen base, as well.

Bronx game two starter Alex Messon was shelled in the loss, hurling 3.1 innings and allowing 12 runs (10 earned) on five hits while walking six, hitting a batter, and striking out five. Reliever Alexander Lora allowed four earned runs while yielding a hit and walking five in 0.2 innings.

Kingsborough's bats stayed hot in game two, as the Wave needed just four innings to record eight hits, including four for extra bases, while also drawing eight walks and stealing four bases.

Piazza paced Kingsborough with a homerun and a triple, driving in five runs in the process while also denting home plate three times. Fonseca went deep as well, driving in three, scoring three times, and walking twice, and Duran singled, drove in three runs, and scored three times. Jace, who cycled in game one, tripled, singled, and walked in game two, while also scoring three times and driving in a run.

Wave starter Francesco Maria Bonvini earned the victory, tossing five innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits while issuing just one free pass and striking out eight.

In Bronx's Thursday victory against the Panthers of BMCC, the Broncos plated 11 runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back, eventually steamrolling the visitors by 19.

Leading the charge for the Broncos at the dish was Steven Correa, as he doubled, singled three times, scored twice, stole a base, and drove in five runs. Angel Calderon recorded three singles, dented home plate twice, walked, and drove in four. Wilkin Ruan singled twice, scored four times, walked, and drove in four. Leonardo doubled, singled, scored twice, and picked up two RBI's, and Albel Ruan tripled, singled, scored three times, walked, and earned four RBI's.

Bronx starter Jordy Garcia pitched well for the host Broncos, tossing six innings and yielding just two earned runs while allowing five hits, walking just one, and striking out seven. Albel Ruan pitched the final inning for Bronx in the win, allowing one run.

BMCC's offense mustered six hits in Thursday's defeat, including three for extra bases. Peter Marino was the lone panther to register multiple hits, as he doubled, singled, and picked up an RBI. Adonis Suarez doubled, walked scored a run, and drove in one, and Gerardo Galan Berihuete doubled and had an RBI.

Panthers starter Nicholas Mattera took the loss on the hill, allowing 10 runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out one.

In Friday's victory over BMCC, the Broncos held a seemingly comfortable 5-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth, before the Panthers plated seven runs in the fifth to catapult ahead 7-5. Showing resiliency, Bronx plated the final seven runs of the game, including one in the fifth, the go-ahead two runs in the sixth, and four insurance runs in the seventh.

Leading Bronx offensively in the 12-7 victory was Correa, as he picked up three hits, including a double and a pair of singles. He also dented home plate twice and stole a base, while driving in three. Albel Ruan tripled, singled twice, and drove in two, and Calderon doubled, singled, and scored a run.

Alex Messon started for Bronx and did a terrific job, tossing four scoreless innings, yielding just two hits and walking three while striking out four. Reliever Christopher Messon struggled mightily, allowing six runs (none earned) on one hit. He also issued three walks and hit a batter. Jefferson Santiago picked up the win, as he was stellar in relief, hurling 4.1 innings and allowing just one earned run while yielding two hits, walking three, and whiffing four.

Peter Rodriguez Reyes was the only Panther to record multiple hits on the day. He notched a pair of singles while denting home plate once and picking up an RBI. Frank Reyes' triple in the fifth brought home three runs. He also scored once and walked once, as well. Jeffrey Roldan and Suarez drew three walks apiece, as well.
