Broncos open 2023 home slate with pair of losses to CUNYAC foe Kingsborough, 10-8 and 9-7

The Broncos' baseball team opened up its home portion of the schedule this week, dropping a pair of games to CUNYAC rival Kingsborough Community College by scores of 10-8 (Tuesday) and 9-7 (Friday). The contests took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the pair of defeats, the Broncos are now 0-6 on the 2023 campaign (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Wave improved to 8-3 (2-0 CUNYAC).

In Tuesday's defeat, Bronx nearly rallied from 9-1 deficit, plating six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to draw to within a pair of runs. After neither CUNYAC foe scored over the ensuing two frames, each team scored a run apiece in the ninth to account for the 10-8 final.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Luis Roman Sanchez singled three times, scoring a run and driving in one, while also stealing a base. Leonardo Francisco reached base three times, as he doubled, singles, and was hit by a pitch. He also dented home plate twice, while driving in a pair. Finally, it was Wilkin Ruan singling and drawing a walk while scoring a run and driving home two.

Starter Christopher Messon was only able to retire one batter, as he allowed a pair of earned runs on four walks and two hits. He received the loss for the Broncos. Jordy Garcia twirled 8.2 innings of relief, allowing just three earned runs (eight overall) on 11 hits while walking two and striking out seven.

Friday's Bronx starter, Alex Messon, did a solid job in the first six innings of action, allowing just three runs to give the Broncos a chance to win the game. He ran out of gas in the seventh, though, allowing six runs to score. For the afternoon, he took the defeat, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on five hits while walking eight, hitting a batter, balking once, and striking out three.

For Kingsborough, Manuel Ariza picked up the victory on the hill, as he tossed 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while issuing just one walk, and striking out eight. The Wave labored in attempting to register the final four outs of the game, with Jonathan Fonseca finally coming in to nail down the one out save, yielding a hit before recording a strikeout to end the game.

Kingsborough's two first inning runs came courtesy of a Nicholas Piazza RBI single, and an RBI groundout by Justin Ramsey. The Wave added a third run in the third inning when Bronx starter Alex Messon balked home a run to increase the visitors' edge to 3-0.

The Broncos found their way on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when Steven Correa picked up an RBI single to slice Bronx's deficit to 3-1. That score would remain steady until the bottom of the sixth inning, when a three-run Broncos rally put the hosts up 4-3. Those three aforementioned runs came courtesy of an RBI single by Angel Calderon, an RBI hit-by-pitch via Leonardo Francisco, and an RBI walk Luis Roman Sanchez. Albel Ruan then popped out with the bases loaded to end Bronx's threat.

Kingsborough catapulted back ahead in a big way in the top of the seventh inning. With Aldo Thomas on third base and nobody out, Bryan Lopez Duran did his job, slashing a ball deep into right field, which was dropped by Jarlyn Suarez. Thomas scored, and Duran motored into second base, as the CUNYAC clash was tied at four apiece.

Later, after Duran reached third on a wild pitch, he would later score when Piazza hit a ground ball to the shortstop Ruan. Ruan collected the ball and attempted to cut down the runner at home plate, but his throw was errant, allowing Duran to score the go-ahead run, as Kingsborough took a 5-4 advantage.

Kingsborough's other four runs in the seventh came via a two-run homerun by Rasmey, an infield RBI single by Yoskar Guzman, and another RBI single by Frank Cullen.

Down 9-4 heading into the seventh, the Broncos rallied, plating three runs via RBI singles by Raul Chevalier and Francisco, and an RBI double by Calderon. Then, with runners on the corners and two outs, Sanchez struck out looking to end the threat, and the game.

The Broncos will look to bounce back from this week's pair of home defeats to Kingsborough on Saturday afternoon, as, weather-permitting, Bronx will travel to Brooklyn, NY to battle the Wave in a CUNYAC doubleheader. Start-time for the opener is slated for 12:00pm, with the second game scheduled for 3:00pm.
