Bronx's two-game CUNYAC winning streak snapped as Broncos edged by Red Hawks, 77-76

The Broncos' men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Thursday evening, falling to CUNYAC foe LaGuardia Community College by a score of 77-76. The game took place in Flushing, NY. With the defeat, Bronx has now dropped two consecutive contests, falling to 3-9 (2-3 CUNYAC). The Red Hawks won for the first time during the 2023-2024 campaign, improving to 1-9 on the year (1-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the defeat for Bronx, freshman standout James Wenzel put forth a tremendous all-around effort, scoring a team-high 23 points (10-18 FG) to go along with eight rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Taijay Good added 13 points, four assists, three rebounds, and a team-high three steals, and Daniel Armstrong posted a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds. Finally, it was Hebert Gary scoring eight points, snatching eight boards, and tying for the game-high of eight assists.

For LaGuardia, Arthur Dukes knocked down 11 out of 14 shots from the charity stripe, finishing with a game-high 24 points while tying for the game-high of eight assists. Noah Delvalle posted a double-double, netting 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Travon Lawrence scored 13 points, and Ahmad Sackor finished with eight points, game-highs of 13 rebounds and four steals, as well as four assists.

In what was a very tightly-contested game between the two CUNYAC foes, Bronx trailed by seven at the half, 41-34, before battling back. However, despite outscoring the Red Hawks in the second half, the Broncos came up short, losing the nail-biting contest by one point (77-76).

Both teams shot very well from the floor, with the Broncos hitting on 45.1 percent of their shots (32-71), and LaGuardia earning a conversion rate of 40.9 percent (27-66). Bronx held a healthy 41-33 edge on the glass, while also dishing 18 assists compared to 17 for the hosts. The Red Hawks compiled 11 steals, while the Broncos finished with six, and LaGuardia won the turnover battle, committing just 10 miscues, while Bronx had 16.

The Broncos will look to end their two-game skid on Thursday evening, as Bronx will host Passaic County Community College. Start-time at the Alumni Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:00pm.
