Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite hearty effort, Broncos come up short at Kingsborough, falling to the Wave, 86-74

The Broncos' men's basketball team suffered a disappointing defeat on Thursday evening, relinquishing a 16-point advantage and falling to the Wave of Kingsborough by a score of 86-74 in CUNYAC action. With the loss, Bronx dipped to 0-4 on the season, including a record of 0-2 in conference play. The Wave improved to 2-3 with the victory, and 1-1 in CUNYAC action.

Despite the loss for Bronx, sophomore Matthew Candelaria paced his squad, registering team-highs of 14 points and five assists, while also tallying four steals. Herbert Gary posted a double-double, netting 12 points (4-8 FG) while snatching a game-high 16 rebounds and dishing three assists. Taijay Good contributed 12 points, and James Wenzel put forth a fine all-around effort, scoring 10 points, grabbing six rebounds, tying for the game-high with six steals, and sprinkling in four assists. Finally, it was Abraham Richter finishing with 10 points, 14 rebounds, and a game-high four blocked shots.

For Kingsborough, Chris Jace put forth a fantastic effort, finishing with team-highs of 20 points (9-17 FG) and nine rebounds, while also tying for the game-high of six steals, and adding five assists. Tysean Boney shot 80 percent from the floor (8-10), finishing with 17 points and three boards, and Xavier Whitfield added 16 points, eight caroms, four assists, and four steals. Orion Anyango finished with 11 points, and Isavior Coombs tallied a game-high seven assists.

After trailing 5-1 in the opening 3:09 of action, the Broncos used a 10-2 run over a span of 3:10 to catapult ahead by a score of 11-7. That run was capped by a converted fastbreak layup by Candelaria, following a beautiful feed from Gary. After four consecutive points squared the CUNYAC clash at 11 apiece, Bronx went on another run, scoring 13 unanswered to take a 24-11 edge. That aforementioned spurt was highlighted by five points from Candelaria.

Kingsborough scored the next four points to inch to within single digits (24-15), but Bronx responded again, netting six straight points (four from Good, and two from Daniel Armstrong) to take its biggest lead of the night, a 16-point advantage, 31-15.

The Wave spent the ensuing 3:03 chipping into the visitors' advantage, putting together a 9-0 run to pull to within seven, 31-24. Bronx would outscore the hosts 5-3 over the final 3:18 of the opening half to take a 36-27 edge into the locker room.

In the second half, Good converted on a layup to put the Broncos ahead 59-50 with 11:52 remaining in the game, but the momentum of the contest swung in Kingsborough's way following that. The Wave put forth a ferocious charge, going on a 12-2 run over a span of 4:04 to take the lead, 62-61, with 7:45 remaining in the game. Bronx did get the lead back momentarily following a bucket by Candelaria, but Kingsborough took the lead for good on a made layup by Boney. Kingsborough led 64-63 at that juncture of the contest, and later held a slim 73-71 edge with 4:26 to go. From there, the Wave finished strong and completed the comeback victory, outscoring the Broncos 13-3 the rest of the way to win the game by 12.

Both teams shot above 40 percent for the evening, with Kingsborough converting on 41.2 percent of its shots (35-85), and the Bronx draining 30 out of 74 attempts from the floor (40.5 percent). Free throw efficiency wasn't on display for either squad, with both teams misfiring on 10 attempts from the stripe (Bronx was 7-17, 41.2 percent, and Kingsborough hit on 10 of 20 for a 50 percent conversion rate).

Bronx held a slim 53-50 edge on the glass, while also swatting seven shots compared to a pair for the hosts. Kingsborough registered 21 assists to Bronx's 15, and the Wave also won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues while forcing 27 Broncos errors.

The Broncos will look to bounce back and pick up its first victory of the season on Saturday, as the Bronx will take on Rockland Community College at the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 3:00pm.
