Broncos' defense forces 38 Red Hawk turnovers, holds LaGuardia to 20 percent shooting (13-65) in dominant win

Bronx's women's basketball team won its second consecutive game to start calendar year 2023, defeating the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College by a score of 57-31. The game took place in Long Island City, NY. With the victory, the Broncos improved to a mark of 5-10 on the year, including a record of 4-3 in CUNYAC action. the Red Hawks dipped to 2-9 with the loss (2-5 in conference play).

Leading the way for Bronx was reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Tatyana Graham, as she finished with a game-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, four dimes, and three steals. Catherline McNeal posted a double-double, netting 15 points, snatching 12 rebounds, and tallying four steals in 39 minutes of play. Ciara Shillingford also recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points, grabbing 14 boards, and tallying four steals, and Treazure Diggins contributed seven points, seven rebounds, a game-high seven assists, and a team-high six steals.

Pacing LaGuardia was Shemiah Sealey, as she scored a team-high 17 points (5-6 FT) while leading all players with seven steals. She also grabbed four rebounds and contributed four assists. Olithia Roach posted a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals before departing after 24 minutes with an injury, and Kaylee Paneto added four points and nine rebounds.

The first quarter didn't produce much offense, as the teams combined for just 10 points. Bronx held a slim 6-4 edge after one quarter. In the second quarter, the Broncos took an 18-13 advantage on a McNeal bucket with 2:16 to go, before heading into the locker room at halftime with a modest 20-17 advantage.

LaGuardia tied the game at 21 apiece 1:45 into the third quarter on a converted layup by Roach. The Broncos, however, dominated the remainder of the CUNYAC clash. Over a span of 4:44, Bronx put together an 11-0 run to take a 32-21 edge. That spurt featured a made jumper by McNeal, a converted layup by Shillingford, a three-point play by McNeal, a fastbreak layup by Graham, and another hoop by McNeal.

After the Red Hawks cut Bronx's lead to single digits (32-23) on a made jumper by Shemiah Sealey, Graham made a layup to put the Broncos back up by double digits (34-23) with 2:44 left in the quarter. Bronx never led by any less than 11 points for the remainder of the evening.

In the fourth quarter, the Broncos led 42-31 with 5:04 remaining after the Red Hawks' Paneto converted on a layup. Remarkably, LaGuardia wouldn't score another point for the remainder of the evening, as the Red Hawks went 0-for-7 with seven turnovers the rest of the way.

It wasn't a terrific shooting night for either squad, as the Broncos connected on just 29.4 percent of their attempts from the floor (25-85) compared to a 20 percent conversion rate for the hosts (13-65). Bronx held a slight edge in the rebonding department, snatching 61 boards compared to 53 for the hosts, and the Broncos doubled-up the Red Hawks in assists (18-9). Bronx also won the turnover battle, committing 26 miscues, while the hosts had 38.

Bronx will look to extend its winning streak to three games, as the Broncos will return to the court on Thursday, January 19, when they travel to Kingsborough to take on the Wave in another CUNYAC contest. Start-time for that clash is scheduled for 6:00pm.
