Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Anthony Arevalo notches a goal, Luis Chavez stops 12 shots in Bronx's season-opening loss to BMCC

The Broncos men's soccer program suffered a loss in its season opener on Tuesday afternoon, falling to CUNYAC foe BMCC by a score of 3-1. The match took place at Pier 40 at Hudson River Park. While this was Bronx' first match of the 2022 campaign (0-1 overall, 0-1 CUNYAC), the Panthers improved to .500 on the season with the triumph (1-1, 1-1 CUNYAC).

Bronx struck first in the opening stages of the conference clash, as Anthony Arevalo blasted a left-footer over keeper Abdul Mumin Seidu's head and into the net to give the Broncos a 1-0 advantage just 77 seconds in. That lead lasted until the 25th minute of action when Dembo Soussoko capitalized on a rebound off a header from a corner kick, putting the ball home to even the score at a goal apiece.

The Broncos had golden opportunity to catapult back ahead on a free kick by Karamoko Timite, but a sensational save by Seidu kept the match even as time expired on the opening session.

BMCC dominated in the second half of play, registering a total of 20 shots compared to just two for Bronx. The Panthers took the lead for good in the 48th minute when Ademola Opesanwo slashed a low left pocket shot into the net to put BMCC ahead 2-1. BMCC added another goal eight minutes later, building a 3-1 cushion when Chris Leon blasted a ball just past Luis Chavez.

Seidu picked up the victory in net for the Panthers, stopping four shots. His defense was stellar throughout the contest, yielding just nine shots from the Broncos, including just a pair in the final 45 minutes of action. Chavez put forth a hearty effort despite the defeat, making 12 saves on the afternoon despite allowing the three scores.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Suffern, NY to take on Rockland Community College. Start time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
