Broncos' fourth quarter dominance leads to pivotal CUNYAC win over Panthers

The Broncos women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter effort on Tuesday evening, outscoring the Panthers 18-8 in the period, and forcing 16 BMCC turnovers, as Bronx captured a crucial 54-44 victory over the hosts in CUNYAC action. With the win, the Broncos improved to a mark of 3-7 overall, while improving to 2-1 in the conference. The Panthers dipped to 1-7 on the year (1-2 CUNYAC) with the defeat.

Bronx standout Shawnasia Ofaire dominated the game in all facets, posting game-highs of 25 points (11-18 FG), nine rebounds, and five assists. She also registered five steals, as well. Tatyana Graham added 10 points, seven boards, three assists, and three steals, and feisty guard Treazure Diggins contributed eight points and a game-high nine steals.

Pacing BMCC in its loss was Amanda Araujo, as she scored a team-high 14 points, knocking down four trifectas in the process. Emily Kennedy contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, and a team-high eight steals, and Demaris Andrews finalized her evening with eight points and six rebounds.

The Broncos trailed 14-6 in the opening 4:53 of the contest, but Bronx finished the first quarter with a 9-0 run to jump ahead by a score of 15-14 after 10 minutes of play. That 9-0 spurt featured a converted fastbreak layup by Ofaire, a sank freebee by Catherline McNeal, another bucket from Ofaire, a drained layup by Graham, and two made free throws by Nyla Harris.

BMCC scored the first seven points of the second quarter to race back ahead by a score of 21-15, thanks to made free throw by Andrews, and two drained triples by Araujo. Just as they did in the first quarter, though, the Broncos would finish the second period strong, outscoring the hosts 11-3 over the final 6:14 of the half to catapult ahead 26-24 as the teams entered the locker room at break. Ofaire scored six of the Broncos' 11 points during that aforementioned run.

In the third quarter, both teams held the lead at least once, but neither school held more than a four point advantage, as the crucial conference battle headed into the fourth period knotted at 36 apiece.

Later, with the Broncos clinging to a 42-40 edge with 5:53 left, Bronx put together a 7-0 run to take a commanding 49-40 lead with 3:24 remaining. That 7-0 run featured four points from Ofaire, and a bucket apiece by Diggins and Graham. BMCC's Emily Kennnedy would nail a three to cut the Panther deficit to six (49-43) with 3:03 to go, but the Panthers failed to register another field goal from that point on, and Bronx would hold on for a hard-fought 10-point win.

The 2021-2022 CUNYAC runners-up were far more efficient shooting the basketball, as the Broncos connected on 43.4 percent of their attempts from the floor (23-53), while holding the Panthers to a 33.3 percent conversion rate (14-42). BMCC held a slight edge in the rebounding department (31-28), while also tallying 10 assists to Bronx's nine. The Broncos won the turnover battle, committing 43 miscues compared to a whopping 56 for the hosts. The opportunitic Broncos collected 29 steals, while the Panthers registered 13. 

Bronx will look to make it three victories in four games this Thursday evening, as the Broncos will travel to Bayside, NY to battle CUNYAC foe Queensborough. Start-time at the Robert F. Kennedy Gymnasium is scheduled for 5:30pm.
