Women's basketball falls to Vikings, 79-53; Shawnasia Ofaire dominates with 33 points, 20 rebounds

The Broncos women's basketball team dropped its fourth consecutive game to start the 2022-2023 campaign, falling to Westchester Community College by a score of 79-53 in a contest played at the Viking Gymnasium in Valhalla, NY. With the victory, Westchester improved to 1-1.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Shawnasia Ofaire put forth a tremendous effort, leading all players on the court with game-highs of 33 points and 20 rebounds. She also added two steals. Tatyana Graham nearly registered a double-double, scoring eight points and snatching 10 rebounds, and Ciara Shillingford snatched 12 rebounds.

Leading the way for the Vikings was Adriana Mcfadden, as she led her squad with a team-high 25 points (6-6 FT). She also snatched six rebounds, swiped five steals, swatted two shots, and added two assists. Mylene Smith netted 16 points, tallied a game-high six assists, collected four steals, and grabbed three rebounds, and Irene Maris and Amanda Entsuah scored eight points apiece. Shanice Wilcox grabbed a team-high 15 boards.

Westchester was in control for the entire game, leading 20-10 after a quarter, 40-17 at the half, and eventually springing ahead by as many as 33 (61-28) before advancing for a 26-point victory.

The biggest differences in the game were shooting percentage and turnovers. Westchester connected on 38.4 percent of its attempts from the floor (28-73), while the Broncos hit on just 26.5 percent of their shots (18-68). The Vikings committed a whopping 33 turnovers, but Bronx eclipsed that, committing 44 of their own. Westchester held a slim 34-32 edge on the glass, while collecting 25 steals compared to 11 for the Broncos. 

Bronx will now have four days off before returning to the court on Tuesday evening, as the Broncos will travel to Garden City, NY to take on the Lions of Nassau. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
