Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Jordy Leon (goal) and Luis Chavez (22 saves) play well, but Broncos edged by Sharks in NJCAA Region XV semifinals

The Broncos men's soccer team saw its 2022 campaign come to a finalization on Wednesday afternoon despite a valiant effort, as Bronx fell to the Sharks of Suffolk Community College by a score of 2-1 in the semifinals of the 2022 NJCAA Region XV Men's Soccer Tournament. With the defeat, the Broncos finished the season with a mark of 6-7, while Suffolk improved to a mark of 13-2.

In what was a very tightly-contested match, neither squad was able to break through for that crucial first goal until 43 minutes in, when the Sharks' Cristian Parra Alvarez capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity, blasting the ball into the net to give his team a 1-0 edge.

Suffolk increased its lead to 2-0 at the 50 minute mark when Hever Reyes headed in a beautiful lead pass from Luke Augeri. Nine minutes later, the Broncos got on the scoreboard when Jordy Leon received a beautiful lead pass from Luis Arevalo before slashing the ball into the goal to slice Bronx's deficit to one at 2-1. That would turn out to be the final goal of the afternoon, as the Sharks held on for the victory to advance to the NJCAA Region XV title game.

Bronx netminder Luis Chavez put forth one of the best performances in tournament history, stopping 22 shots to give his team a fighting chance.

Despite the loss, the Broncos still accomplished plenty this season. Under first year Head Coach Howard Cephas, the team won six matches for just the second time since the conclusion of the 2015 season. The Arevalo brothers, Luis and Anthony, were honored by the CUNY Athletic Conference with postseason awards. The team then eliminated conference foe Queensborough from the NJCAA Region XV National Tournament, before giving the No. 2 seed Suffolk all it could handle in the semifinals. 2023 and beyond certainly looks bright for the Broncos!
